Dieties of Gero

The "True Gods" of Gero can be divided into three categories:

    Elder powers:
The elder powers are those beings who came into existence during the first phase of creation. When the world was still new, any new idea or concept seemed to generate a being representing that concept. When the rivalry of these beings threatened to destroy them all, they left, agreeing in a Covenant that they would only act through agents.

Thus far, no Elder Power has broken the Covenant. Because they are incarnate, they may take any form--be of any race or gender. Likewise, their Priesthoods and Orders are open to all who qualify, though many Races find it hard to advance far in their service.

    Ascended:
The ascended dieties are those individuals who achieved such a level of power and focus that they became worshipped in their own right. Their Templars usually have special abilities matching those of the diety before he ascended. In ascending, they too must agree to abide by the terms of the Covenant of the Elder Powers. Although they accept any race in their Priests, their Templars are generally drawn only from the ranks of their original race.

    The Fallen:
Also known as the Forgotten, these are the small handful of True Dieties who are no longer worshipped. It is unknown whether such a being could be revived, if a group of believers were to reform. They were often one of the Ascended, whose followers were wiped out in the course of war or natural disaster. It is believed that, in theory, a Cult could form around such a faith, using the slumbering god as a focus.

Following is a list of Dieties (There are no listings for the Fallen):

    KEY:
    A--Allied
The faith is ranked as an ally, and should be given aid, even at considerable risk to the Priest or Templar.
    F--Friendly
The faith in question is to be treated with friendship. Aid should be given, unless there is too great a risk in doing so.
    T--Tolerant
The other faith is tolerated, and may be assisted in times of common cause. Conflict is unlikely, and will be genreally confined to verbal disagreement.
    N--Neutral
There are no strong feelings, one way or the other, about the other faith. Aid will be offered only in cases of significant benefit, and conflict will only arise if genuinely provoked.
    D--Dislike/Disdain/Distrust
Essentially, the other faith is viewed with a mildly negative reaction. While assistance would not be ruled out, it would only be provided if the Priest or Templar saw some strong benefit. Verbal barbs are likely in any case, and provocation can escalate things to a more direct challenge.
    O--Opposition
The other faith is to be opposed whenever feasible. This can mean armed conflict, but political maneuvering, espionage and sabotage are far more likely. Even short-term alliance would require a major threat to both groups.
    H--Hatred
Enemy faiths will receive even stronger opposition. Nothing short of imminent mutual annihilation will induce any kind of cooperation or truce, and sometimes the groups will still prefer to honor their animosity.
NOTES: As might be expected, some degree of variance can be found throughout the various faiths. As a rule of thumb, any attitude within one "shift" of the faith's overall attitude will not be cause for notice. More severe deviations may result in some action, either formal or informal, by the heirarchy to determine what the reason is, and possibly to order an attitude adjustment. The precise nature of such action is, of course, idiosyncratic to the faith in question.

For instance, a Priest of Vegfiro could probably get away with a less-than-vigilant attitude toward the Temple of Tufrone, so long as he still denounced their value system (Dislike instead of Opposition). However, if he were to be seen dealing with them on a day-to-day basis, possibly making regular purchases from them (thus displaying a Neutral attitude, if not even a tolerant one), a few of his peers might pull him aside and offer some sage advice about the need to distance himself from the Hoarders.

On the other hand, an Overseer of Drovelor who was discovered to have a mutually beneficial arrangement with a Mask of Sile might very well have his loyalties called into question before a commision of inquiry.

For the various totemic faiths and cults, some common sense should apply. Keep in mind that most of the time, if there would appear to be no regular interaction with the Diety, the cultist/shaman will probably be Neutral. Some general rules can be made, though:

Shamen of Animal and Plant Totems will be Friendly to, and viewed as Friends by, the faithful of Ruffalonna. Likewise, most shamen of Seasonal Totems will be at least Tolerant of Celeban.

Racial Totems have the following attitudes towards their respective Ascended Dieties:

    • Elf-Priests are Tolerant of the unusually militaristic servants of Tevlor, who in turn are Friendly to their parent race.
    • The followers of Tufrone and the Kobold-Priests view one another with equal Disdain.
    • Dwarf-Priests consider the faithful of Genveer to be Friends, and are treated as Allies by them.
    • Gnome-Priests are Tolerant of the followers of Smathpan, who treat them with the same Neutrality with which they treat everyone else.
    • Drow-Priests and Sileites view one another with a Hatred that is only matched by their mutual enmity with the Spider Cultists of Lolth.
    • The Goblin-Priests Hate the children of Vegfiro, who Oppose them at every opportunity.

    • Return to the Book of the Gods.
    • Return to the Overview of Gero.
    • Return to Freemage's Lab.
