Thilg
Bringer of Knowledge

Thilg is the Keeper of Records, the Loremaster. Thilg
represents all efforts at study, learning and knowledge.
Thilg created language, and is responsible for all means of
communication. The Loremaster is also responsible for
divinitory magics. Thilg's Ethos demands truth at all
times from its adherents.

Priests:
Priests of Thilg maintain extensive libraries. They serve
as scribes, and often as judges. The Temples of Thilg are
also perhaps the best-known sponsors of adventurers. The
Priests only require a small share of treasure gained, as
well as extensive recordkeeping on creatures, terrain and
phenomena.

Laity:
Judges, scribes, scholars, translators and
cartographers all pay homage to Thilg. In addition, anyone
seeking information may be able to get a head start by
making an offering at a local temple.

The Seekers of Thilg
Thilg's Seekers are dedicated to the advancement and
preservation of knowledge and language, and also to the
discovery of lost lore. They are masters of divination and
reason, and consider Truth to be sacred.

Initiation:
The Seekers are constantly on the lookout for
individuals of intelligence, honesty and rationality. It
is not unheard of for a sage in his twilight years to be
approached and offered a position with them.
More often, youths of promise and ability are invited to
become apprentices and scribes for a Temple. After several
years of hard work learning to read and write in multiple
languages, the apprentice is tested for her knowledge of
the materials she has transcribed, as well as her honesty.
This has had an interesting side-effect: When dealing with
individuals outside the Order, most Seekers are adept at
evasive or vague answers in order to avoid an outright lie.
The new Initiate is then taught the arts of divination,
as well as receiving a top-notch education in history and
continuing study of languages.
Initiation ends with a ceremony in which the Initiate
passes through the Light of Thilg, burning away all
deceptions.

Structure:
The Seekers are divided into several Colleges, each
devoted to a particular aspect of study and service to the
Temple. Each College is further divded into ranks, and the
same ranks are used in each College.
Scribblers are the lowest rank, often serving primarily
as apprentices, although sometimes a Scribbler will also
be assigned to run minor errands for the Temple as a whole.
Biblios are responsible for maintaining the Library of
their home Temple, or for seeking out new additions. Note
that this overlaps with the functions of College Bibla.
All the Colleges have at least some Biblios, however, to
ensure that members will be able to locate needed works.
Biblios also visit Temples of other faiths dedicated to
particular fields of study (such as the Temple of Awr's
extensive military histories).
Researchers are the most common type of "adventurer",
as they are responsible for going out and gaining
information. Researchers who excel may eventually be given
permission to investigate their own pet theories and
interests, possibly leading to advancement to the next
rank.
Theoreticians are able to direct the actions of a small
group of researchers of their College. As such, they
command tremendous influence in academic circles, since
they can usually learn anything they set their minds to.
When members of different Colleges meet, authority is
supposed to go to the Seeker whose College most applies
to a situation, regardless of rank, but few Scribblers
would really try to order around a Theoritician on the
basis of this rule. Rather, the higher-ranking Seeker
phrases his orders as "advice", which the lower-ranking
Seeker will almost always follow.
Below is a sampling of some of the larger Colleges.
Most Temples will only have one or two Colleges represented
in their buildings, although a few large Temples have as
many as ten or twenty Colleges.
College Relli concerns itself with the study of
religions, be they contemporary or ancient.
College Soci studies different modern cultures and
their histories, and the "soft" sciences.
College Roine is dedicated to the study of ancient
civilizations and lost societies.
College Longway studies languages, both ancient and
modern, and watches for linguistic shifts and developments.
College Bibla is responsible for maintaining and
storing written works, including plays, histories and works
of fiction.
College Arcas is dedicated to the development of magic,
especially divination magic, and to the "hard sciences"
as well.
College Ecclet is the loosest of the Colleges, and
encourages its members to study a variety of subjects,
including those technically the province of another
College. Members who pioneer a new field of study are
often granted permission to found a new College.

Adventure Notes:
The Temples of Thilg are among the premiere sponsors of
exploration and recovery missions. The only real drawback
to taking such an assignment is that they insist on having
the right to claim any treasures of historical
significance, including magical items. Even then, however,
such items are often returned after being studied and
properly documented.
As the Seekers are often hired by constabularies to
solve particularly important crimes, characters operating
on both sides of the law may encounter them as allies or
opponents.

Dogma:
Truth is sacred--never violate your duty to it.
Protect the written word, for it is the storehouse of
the Truth.
Acquire knowledge voraciously, defend knowledge with
your lifeblood.
The Truth is all--beyond good, beyond evil.
Those who would destroy or censor knowledge must
themselves be destroyed.
Bring down those who deal falsely with the Temple of
Thilg.
Learning and Reason should be advanced whenever
possible, and societies which advance them should be
supported.
Bans: Lying to anyone, withholding information from the
Seekers, destroying written works.
