Gerof

    The Maker of All

Gerof the World-maker is credited with the creation of
both sky and earth. Gero is considered to be the first
of the gods, although the followers of Tronet say that
their diety came into being simultaneously.

Priests: The priesthood of Gerof is dedicated to the advancement of civilization. They fund the arts in any city where they exist, and are also commonly supporters of major civic construction projects. Spheres & Powers

Laity: Most good and neutral societies give Gerof at least lip-service, and he is the patron of all who make or build for a living.
Templars: The Makers are all accomplished artisans and craftsmen as well as warriors. They are frequently hired out as guardians to museums and monuments.
Initiation: Virtually all socially advanced societies have at least one Temple dedicated to this diety. Priests regularly hold contests for the local youths, seeking prodigies. Youths of skill in one or more artistic or craft skills are quickly interviewed to assess their suitability. In general, most families are delighted at the idea, as the Makers are highly respected. Training usually lasts well into late adolescence, whereupon the initiate, known as an Apprentice, is required to spend a year producing a single work of his chosen craft. Only if the work is judged suitable is he or she given the rank of Journeyman.
Structure: There are five ranks of Makers, based on the heirarchy of craft guilds. In ascending order, these are Apprentice (initiate), Journeyman, Guilder, Craftsman and Master Craftsman. Journeymen travel from Temple to Temple, increasing their skills and knowledge. They are also the ones most often selected to guard works of art, or even artisans, outside the Temples. Journeymen are expected to act as representatives of Gerof and guardians of travelling Priests. Guilders are, in theory, equal in rank to Journeymen. In practice, a Guilder who is at his assigned Temple will expect, and receive, more deference than a freshly-arrived Journeyman. Guilders are responsible for handling the day-to-day operations of the Temples, and as such, are less prone to travel. However, the founding of new Shrines is almost always given to a Guilder who has recently achieved the rank of Craftsman (see below). Naturally, Guilders are also expected to handle military and criminal threats to the Temple and its treasures. Craftsmen are individuals who have achieved the recognition of their peers for both artistic skill and outstanding service. They can be drawn from the ranks of either Journeymen or Guilders, and when introducing themselves to others of their Order, will call themselves either Guilder Craftsmen or Journeyman Craftsmen, accordingly. There is only one Master Craftsman to a given region, and when he or she dies or steps down, a great contest is held among all the Craftsmen of the region to select the successor. Master Craftsmen are responsible for orderly communications among the Temples in their regions, maintaining ties with other Masters, and for assuring that Temples or Shrines facing severe threats are given the necessary support and resources to defend themselves. The Master Craftsman is also the only one who can confer the title of Craftsman, although this can be done through written communication, with the ceremony being performed with the subject in absentia.
Adventurer Notes: Obviously, most adventuring Makers will be Journeymen, probably seeking to achieve Craftsman status. Guilders seeking to establish new Temples can make for interesting one-shots. Makers will be interested in any activity which holds the promise of advancing or preserving the arts, or finding lost works, especially those of forgotten or alien cultures. Frontier Temples may also request Journeymen to perform more secular tasks which could provide greater funding for the Temple. Many Journeymen travel to areas outside the current influence of the Temples, seeking to act as missionaries while examing the arts and crafts of the foreign cultures they travel through. The Temples of Gerof often sponsor art and craft contests, and characters unallied with the Temple could be drawn into one of these. Similarly, the Temple will often pay adventurers who are travelling to foriegn regions to bring back "souvenirs" for study. Wizards seeking to make powerful magic items will often seek products manufactured by the Makers, as these are of far higher quality than those made by ordinary craftsmen.
Dogma: Preserve and enhance the established arts, seek out new arts and rediscover forgotten crafts. Creation thrives in civilized culture--shield cultures which value the arts. The Temples of Gerof are the cornerstones of Creation itself--Defend them with your life's blood. Destroy those who would defile Temple or Art. Creation strengthens Gerof. Create your own works, that Gerof may grow stronger. All Creation is equal. The bricklayer and the sculptor are brothers, even if they know it not. Bans: Destruction of art or craftwork, harming an artist or suppressing the arts, undermining an arts-valuing culture.
