The History of Clarence High School Bands

Sometime prior to 1946, at Parker High School, the band program was established. It wasn't until 1947 that the district started to develop a fine educational music program and one of the finest in Western New York.

In 1950, while Mr. S. was principal, the band continued to grow in size and the standard of quality was elevated. Former instrumental faculty such as (some people I've never heard of) took great pride in the increasing ability of the student musicians to create a positive attitude, an interest in others, a dedication to worthy ideas, and noble character. These principles have become the cornerstone of the Clarence Band tradition.

In 1962, Mr. B. became the director of the Clarence High School Band, and brought national recognition to the instrumental music program. He established the present Wind Ensemble, began the Annual Kleinhans Concert, commissioned composers for new works and brought guest artists to share their talents with the student musicians. They also perform at the New York State School Music Association Conference(NYSSMA), Mid-East Band Clinic, Mid-West Band Clinic, National Cherry Blossom Festival, and the Gorham pageant of Bands.

From 1969 to 1971, the direction of the high school band was under the baton of Mr. G. and Mr. H. The years of 1970 and 1971 saw the addition of Mr. R. and Mr. S. to the band program. Under their direction, the band forged new directions for the next 25 years. Mr. R. brought notoriety to the previously understated Symphonic Band while Mr. S. continued to bring an impressive array of guest artists to Clarence, their ensembles have been honored and have performed at various national and international professional confrences, and they established the biannual tours to major cities in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

In the fall of 1996, Mr. Eicher and Mr. Vitello took over the batons of the Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Band. In 1997, the Concert Band was added to the program under the direction of Mr. Stroth. All three directors are committed to maintaning the Clarence Band tradition, and forging ahead to even greater accomplishments.

The Clarence High School Band Directors, past and present, believe the success of the Clarence Band Program is due to the large part to outstanding Elementary, and Middle School Music Faculty Members, the commitment and hard work of the school Administration and Board of Education, and the efforts of the Band Boosters and parents. Also, many thanks must go to the patrons in our community who support the Clarence Bands with gifts, concert attendance, fruit sales, sub sales, car washes, pop can drives, and our most recent event, the Annual Golf Tournament.

The Clarence Central School Bands have long enjoyed a national reputation for musical excellence and worthy educational achivements. Because of our guest apperances at music conferences and festivals, NYSSMA ratings, local concerts, national and international tours, recordings; as well as the numerous Clarence students who appear at county, regional, state music festivals; conductors, audiences, music educators, and students from other schools alike, have come to expect exeptionally high levels of musical performance and personal behavior from the Clarence Bands and their members.

It is the purpose of the music department to maintain this worthy tradition while increasing the musical sensitivity and knowlage of our band members and stimulating character growth though cooperate effort, self-disapline, responsibility, attention to detail, and the desire for perfection (that's me!). We believe that each student, as a direct result of his/her full participation in the Clarence Music Program, will be a lifelong independant comprehensive musician.

All right, enough with the official stuff, I wanna see something BANDISH!
