Raveley Drain |
The Forty-Foot is a typical fen drain being straight and generally featureless with steep banks although there are accessible swims along most of it length. Unfortunately parking is problem along the stretch between Forty Foot bridge and Hardings bridge at Chatteris although there is a fairly wide grass strip for about 100 yards or so at Forty Foot bridge there is also a little bit of feature to the drain here. It also possible to park at pudock by leaving the main Forty Foot road and parking just over the bridge. The drain has a good stock of pike although a greater number of these are Jacks it does produce fair number of doubles and even the odd 20 plus. As well as the pike population there is also zander in quite large numbers and reasonable sizes. The Ramsey end is reputed to be the better end under the theory that the cormorants at the Chatteris end drive the prey fish down to this end and the pike follow. However we have found very little difference at either end.The water can become very choppy making float fishing impossible at times and require a quite heavy lead just to hold bottom. The section from the Forty Foot Bridge to Pudock Bridge is run by the Ramsey angling club and from Pudock Bridge is run by Chatteris angling club. |
