Staff Sgt. Joe L. Dunigan Jr., 37, of Belton, Texas, was killed when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Fallujah, Iraq, March 11, 2004. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He was a section leader for Company B. He joined the Army in October 1992 and had been stationed at Fort Riley since February 2002. He was also stationed at Fort Riley from 1995 to 1998. Dunigan deployed to Iraq in September 2003.

Spc. Christopher K. Hill, 26, of Ventura, Calif., was killed when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Fallujah, Iraq, March 11, 2004. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He was an infantryman in Headquarters and Headquarters Company. He served on active duty from September 1998 to August 2002. He rejoined the Army and was stationed at Fort Riley in April 2003. Hill deployed to Iraq in September 2003.

Sgt. Christopher Ramirez, 34, of McAllen, Texas, was killed April 14, 2004, in Al Anbar Province in Iraq from injuries sustained during combat operations. The soldier was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He was an infantryman. He joined the Army in August 1991 and had been stationed at Fort Riley since December 2001. This was his second assignment at Fort Riley.

Capt. John E. Tipton, 32, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., died May 2, 2004, in the Al Anbar Province in Iraq. Tipton was the company commander for Fort Riley's Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He enlisted in the Army in August 1989 and served in Operation Desert Storm. He went on to complete ROTC at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, where he was a distinguished military graduate in 1995. Tipton had been stationed at Fort Riley since August 2000 and deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom in September 2003.

Sgt. Daniel M. Shepherd, 23, of Elyria, Ohio, died Aug. 15, 2004, at Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when the vehicle he was traveling in hit an improvised explosive device. Shepherd was a Bradley commander with Fort Riley's Company A, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He enlisted into the Army in July 2000. Shepherd had been stationed at Fort Riley since December 2000 and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in September 2003.
