| Founded in 1996, Projeto Quixote is a multi-dimensional project dedicated to helping children and adolescents living on the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Initial efforts were inspired by the story of Don Quixote, the fictional Spanish knight who fought valiantly against all foesreal and imaginaryin hopes of protecting the weak and vulnerable. This idealistic spirit has taken shape in Projeto Quixotes decision not only to provide basic social and medical services for impoverished youth, but also to use the arts as a weapon against the invisible feeling of despair often surrounding disadvantaged communities.
At the center of Projeto Quixotes innovative approach is offering creative workshops for children and adolescents alongside psychiatric and pediatric care. Activities such as drumming, arts and crafts, theatre, traditional dance, and community painting projects provide ways in which impoverished youth can improve their physical, cultural, and social environment. Projeto Quixote is now a collaborative network of clinicians, educators, and legal and social professionals, forming a strong web of support for children and adolescents all over Sao Paulo. Since 1999, the project has helped more than 1000 children and adolescents, winning several major awards for its efforts in defending the rights of socially-deprived youth. The scope of Projeto Quixotes activity continues to grow, ranging from programs targeting drug abuse and violence to disease prevention projects in favelas surounding the city. Projeto Quixote is affiliated with the Federal University of Sao Paulo, along with support from the Ministry of Social Development and the Ministry of Health in the state of Sao Paulo.
