| Margret Chang is a violinist (fiddler), pianist, and cellist with more than 17 years of musical training. She has used her classical background as a base from which to explore different styles of music, including bluegrass, celtic, folk, and flamenco. As an aspiring physician, she remains committed to exploring the healing benefits of music and continues to play in nursing homes and other clinical settings around Atlanta.
Margret holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and has frequently used her music and writing to raise public awareness of issues around healthcare and social justice. These concerns have also been at the center of her work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where she is currently a research fellow developing low-literacy health education materials and studying cultural, social, and environmental forces influencing the prevalence of diabetes in underserved populations. Inspired by her experience with low-literacy populations, Margrets current interests involve looking at how different cultures use music to deal with lifes difficulties and uncertainties. She is also the founder of the ethnomusicology project Pulse, which looks at folk music as a means of motivating people from all cultures to maintain healthy lifestyles. Margret will enter Brown Medical School in the fall of 2006. She plans to become an internist and an advocate for cross-disciplinary approaches to medicineuniting the efforts of healthcare providers, legal professionals, scholars, and artists to meet the needs of the underserved. |
