Dropout Prevention
North Carolina's Compulsory Attendance Law requires every child between the ages of 7 and 16 to attend school.  The Student Support Specialists main task is to provide intervention for those students who are at-risk of dropping out.  The Student Support Specialist will create and implement programs/strategies that will aid in lowering the dropout rate at FHS.  Some current programs/strategies include:

- a trasition program for selected 9th graders;
- classroom lessons
- school/comminuty collaborations;
- student focus groups;
- individual/group counseling;
- a mentoring program;
- tutoring.
What steps to take if you think your child is at-risk of dropping out

1. Communicate with your child
2. Stay connected to teachers
3. Get involved in your child's education
4. Contact the Student Support Specialist
As a last resource:

Bridges to Life Youth Guidance Program
The Bridges to Life Youth Guidance Program was created with the help of a United Way Grant.  This program provides after-school activities for students.  Students can stay after for tutoring, or activites such as: Communication and Leadership, Stress Management and Public Speaking Workshops, etc.  The "Bridges" program provides students an opportunity to gain essential life skills, interact with peers and/or improve grades.

As part of the "Bridges" entity the Bridges Mentor Program works with Community Mentors to provide Freshmen with supportive adults who can help them in various areas such as: transitions, study skills, life skills, personal problems, goals setting, etc.

The Bridges Program also provides incentives,which include fieldtrips, movie tickets, lunch coupons, etc.

In the 2006/2007 school year Bridges, in collaboration with the Media Center, started a monthly Book Club.
