Text Box: What Can Students Do?

High school can be challenging; however, if you are prepared you will be successful.

Take advantage of any opportunities to visit the school. Find out where your classes are before the 1st day. Knowing where you are supposed to go will take the pressure off!

Visit the Guidance Office and ask questions! Review your class schedule and discuss your future school and/or career plans.

Get Organized!! Part of this new endeavor is the change in class structure. Keep your supplies in order and keep a date/schedule book.

Refresh your study skills. Organization skills and study skills are two major skills that you will need to be successful. If you need help with either, make sure you visit the guidance office for tips!

Get involved in a sport or club. It will provide an outlet for you and you will meet students that have the same interests as you do.

Relax! You are not in this alone!

What Can Parents Do?

Parents can show active concern and

 involvement with students’ academic lives.

¨ Help with scheduling classes.

¨ Discuss the long term results associated with doing well in class.

¨ Attend any and all open house events.

¨ Make an effort to know teachers and

      administrators.

¨ Communicate with your child about:

Classes, Peers, School, Teachers, etc.

¨ Be sensitive to the issues that your child feels are important , even if they seem    trivial.

¨ Keep the lines of communication open between  teachers, administrators, ex-spouses and most importantly, your student.

Finally, don’t be afraid to seek help.  Transitions can be stressful on students and their families.  Find the solutions that work for you and your family.
