Summer Fives 2001

April 2001 saw the birth of Crawley's newest five-a-side football club. To the dismay of graffitis artists throughout town and Crawley Leisure Centre's ageing reception staff FC Jiggleitalittleitllopen was born! After Phil and Chris Laker had tried and failed to form two separate sides the decision was made to join forces. Chris brought with him Crawley News sports reporter and part-time Sunday leaguer Matt Nash plus nippy East Grinstead based frontman Stewart Coggin. Phil's contribution was himself and ex-Corinthian Rangers Under 16 defender Andy Hale. The new side whipped themselves into shape, training with enthusiasm and vigour at their adopted home of Southgate playing fields, Matt Nash secured the signing of Netherne FC blue and white kit as the side equipped themselves for what they anticipated would be a baptism of fire. What better way to start than against champions at least 700 years running Caledonian Old Boys! What followed was the start of an era as any shortage in finesse was made up for by a tremendous spirit on the pitch. Caledonian were kept on their toes all the way to a 1-0 win. The Jigglers had made plans for not getting many points at all so breaking that duck by Week 2 was mightily encouraging. British Airways Reserves were clearly rubbing their hands together at the sight of the rookie Jigglers so were doubly frustrated to be held to a goalless draw. A first heroic point! A point..surely a blip. Not so. Jiggle featured Graeme Marsh, a former Naked Reds team-mate of Phil Laker, a man of dark humour to make advocates of caustic dry wit like Jack Dee and Angus Deayton seem positively Graham Norton like as they took on XL5. A heavy defeat loomed against a powerful opposition and a 2-0 half-time deficit looked like heralding a second reverse. Enter Stewart Coggin with the first ever, and still one of the best Jiggle goals to reduce the arrears and then again, pouncing on a defensive slip to grab a great 2-2 draw. A hugely encouraging start to 5-a-side life with enthusiasm undampened by a subsequent single goal defeat to WWWS. A first win had never really entered the teams thoughts so what followed in Game 5 was memorable if utterly gutting. 2nd placed and unbeaten Digi-Thales were stunned by a 13th minute Matt Nash goal. So it stayed till deep into stoppage time when a cruel equaliser meant Jiggle had to settle for a point. Only 5 goals had been conceded when thrashings had been expected and so it continued as CPI Crawley squeaked home by the only goal a week later. This opening campaign featured just the five man squad so some truly classic stand-ins were employed. One of high calibre filled the Jiggle goal in Week 7 as Ifield keeper Del Hayward stood in for the holidaying Phil Laker. Del could only plead desperately for help his own blinder couldn't avert a 4-0 defeat to Virgion. Next up was an ominous task - the hottest ever favourites in Vasco De Banana. This was the original County League select. They only needed four men to see off a spirited Jiggle, including the memorably awful Clayton Low by a cushty 2-0. The table still showed Jiggle some three off the bottom ahead of the games they were really looking forward to, against their fellow strugglers. First up, Worth Warriors. Well they would have been, they hadn't turned up for six weeks and didn't disappoint this time, bunking off again to give Jiggle a 2-0 win. But, the first win ever! They say winning is a habit. They're right - it happened again a week later! Alas Misfits didn't turn up either. Two out of two and not a limb extended. Easy this footy lark. Game 11 and this was THE big one. Jiggle debuted Ben Whiteman and Southern Celtic were the opposition. A huge win could see 7th place snatched. Couldn't happen. Matt Nash put Jiggle one-up before the break, Whiteman bagged a second just after, Matt Nash and Stewart Coggin with a brace made it a night to remember. Even better, Misfits showed up on Pitch 1 and held CPI 0-0. Jiggle's whopping win got them 7th! A terrific first season full of entertainment. The Jigglers would be straining at the leash to do it all again in the Autumn!

Autumn Fives 2001

Jiggle arrived for their second season, full of enthusiasm and looking the biz in the all new red and black FC Jiggle kit. Could Jiggle get anywhere near the 7th place amazingly gained in the Summer? The five-man squad had been increased to six in the run-up to the campaign as Phil Laker secured the services of ex-FC Portaloo player Nick Hawtin, a midfielder whose talent was spotted in a Virgin Megastores staff kickaround. The first Autumn campaign began superbly as a last minute Matt Nash winner dispatched SK Athletic but suffered a setback a week later in a woeful 2-0 reverse to Gilly's Heroes. What followed was an amazing season. A place in the bottom four, picking up points here and there with the odd win a bonus was the target. Jiggle proceeded to concede just once in six games as Chris Laker and Ben Whiteman formed a fantastic partnership in defence. Blue Shirts were the first victims as Nick Hawtin's debut strike gave Jiggle a 1-0 win in Game 3. Goalless draws with CPI Crawley and Ifield Eagles kept up the fine form before a truly magnificent team effort ended the unbeaten run of 2nd placed Orange Kit-Kats courtesy of a Stewart Coggin goal in Week 6. Could things get any better? They sure could. Matt Nash stunned league leaders The Blues with a strike in 30 seconds before a late equaliser salvaged the favourites a point. Another seasoned side in Alltraders were held 0-0 to leave Jiggle in a mouth-watering position just off the promised land of the top four. This proved to be top scorer Matt Nash's final match for the Jigglers sadly departing in opposition to the squad rotating system the bigger squad had brought about. Proving a further distraction this season was the matter of matches postponed in Week 4. No-one seemed to be doing anything about it, the Leisure Centre said they would if it mattered. Jiggle decided it did and re-arranged their match with Half Moon for 6pm in Week 10, forming part of a double-header that night. Stewart Coggin and Ben Whiteman grabbed a goal apiece to give Jiggle a massive three points but the unlikely play-off dream was dealt a blow by B & CE's 2-0 win in the 8.30 second leg. All would come down to a final day decider. Six minutes in and Jiggle ahead through an own goal. Did we dare to dream the impossible? We did but a frozen pitch and an extremely violent Gatwick Gladiators proved too strong as Jiggle went down to a 3-1 defeat. No complaints, this was a cracking season with the 5th placed finish still a record and even better as it was totally unexpected when the season began.

New Year Fives 2002

The Autumn had far exceeded expectations with near qualification in only our second season. Predictably then after all the hard-work and glory would come a bit of a dip. The scale of the dip may not have been so expected. This was a tough league by any standards and the first five weeks saw three meetings with fancied sides. Jiggle had strengthened in the close season with the signing of seasoned Crawley Leaguer Jon Hawtin coming in to replace the departed Matt Nash and it was Hawtin who wasted no time giving his new side a deserved half-time lead in the opener with Cowboys & Indians. A heroic defence held firm till the 17th minute when two goals in two minutes rescued the pre-season favourites. These good signs were were soon extinguished as a truly woeful offering allowed rampant Caledonian to stroll home 5-0 in Week 2. Blue Shirts fell behind to a Stewart Coggin strike a week later before a penalty and duff marking saw them too come from behind for victory. Ifield Eagles capitalised on the poor form with a 1-0 win before CPI Crawley made it SEVEN defeats on the spin by the same margin seven days on. Surely something had to go our way? Ben Whiteman's regular unavailability needed countering and it was with the signing of ex-Oakwood player Danny Patel. Patel made his debut and added a more direct approach helping the side to a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Livingwell, Jon Hawtin's second-half goal proving decisive. Defenisve stability was slowly returning and 0-0's with Mister Men and Motley Crew continued to steady the ship. A 1-0 reverse to all-conquering Horley proved there was plenty of fight left in this season, despite just five points from nine games. This match also heralded the last appearance in a Jiggle shirt of co-founder and Jiggle legend Andy Hale, off to a new life in leafy Milton Keynes. And so it was to the most eagerly anticipated clash to date. Championship chasing internet rivals Alltraders were next up in a match complete with online programme. Jon Hawtin struck in three minutes as Jiggle ended the title ambitions of the men in lime green. Party-pooping was becoming quite a habit. The Jigglers were at it again seven days later as a final day Stewart Coggin goal saw off a 34C's side needing three points to deny Alltraders a place in the last eight. 9th place represented something to build upon.

Summer 2002

Having ended New Year with wins over two of that divisions top sides and second in the form league over the final seven games optimism was plentiful going into Jiggle's second year. Even more cause for celebration was at last securing the signings of AF Typhoons pair David Leake and Dave Carling. Leake, Typhoons main (only) defensive lynchpin and Carling their four-goal top scorer would prove fine acquisitions. The season started on an eventful note as Danny Patel forgot there was a match and spent the evening at the airport. Dave Carling stepped in for a debut but despite Jiggle domination CPI B couldn't be broken down. Tougher tests would provide an insight into the season's prospects. It didn't look good as a poor display let Bentcomp coast to a 1-0 thrashing in Week 2. Ifield Eagles added to the disappointment winning 1-0 the following Friday before injuries galore saw a rookie line-up go three down in seven minutes, eventually losing 3-1 to Budd Boys. The first Jiggle goal of the season saw Dave Carling open his league account. Injury robbed the side of Chris Laker for a second game but David Leake and Nick Hawtin formed a more than handy partnership in his absence to help the Jigglers to a 0-0 draw with Copthorne in Week 5. The turning point. An early strike by The Boys put Jiggle on the back foot but two opportunist Jon Hawtin strikes in two minutes wrapped up the first win seven days later. Holidays saw Nick Hawtin in temporary charge for a spirited 1-0 defeat to reigning champs The Blues which continued the improvement, as did a solid if frustrating 0-0 draw with Southern Celtic. Enter the Eagle! Paul Eagle had made two appearances in goal that season before bursting onto the scene on pitch with a last-minute winner to beat CT Peruvians in Game 9. A brilliant all-round display a week later and Nick Hawtin's first goal in ten months set the Jigglers on their way to a great 2-0 win against play-off chasing Gilly's Heroes. Dave Carling bagged the second as the damage was done before half-time. The season and a mighty fine top six finish was secured with a 1-0 final day win against Thermo. The previously goal-shy Hawtin Junior now had two in a week. Times were looking good! This season also saw Jiggle's arrival on the day tournament scene. The beautifully named Bright 106.4FM Challenge Trophy at Haywards Heath FC saw the Jigglers take their bow with an 3-0 reverse to The Witch and two excellent draws, 2-2 with Turner's Hill III and 1-1 with league winners Triangle Few. Dave Carling's first ever Jiggle goal and Chris Laker's rare strike were a minute from bagging victory in the first of those while hotshot Jon Hawtin beat the keeper of County League champions Burgess Hill Town to give Jiggle the lead in the second. A few weeks later, the Burgess Hill Festival saw Jiggle making real progress. The results didn't do the side justice as Phoenix United were battered into submission with all but a goal, County All-Stars squeezed their way to a 1-0 win and East-Side Massive capitalised on Chris Laker's early withdrawal to romp home 4-0.

Autumn 2002

The Jigglers kicked off the campaign on a high after the tremendous finish to the summer. The three wins to end that season were swiftly added to. Nick Hawtin and Dave Carling grabbed one apiece to see off CPI B before Hawtin netted for the fourth game running to set up a 2-0 triumph against Templec Hawks. Paul Eagle bagged the other. The unbeaten start was maintained by a 0-0 draw with Caledonian, a battling 2-0 reverse to the machine-like White Knights in Game 4 provided a first defeat and then a true classic! Peter Sweet was in County form to give Baker Boys a 2-0 lead. Jon Hawtin with a deft strike, his brother with a near post thunderbolt and a last-minute winner from the ice-cool Dave Carling completed a stunning comeback. The fine form continued, unbeaten Tel Town held to a goalless draw in Game 6, with both sides striking the post twice. CT Peruvians became Jiggle's fourth victims of the season and the first side to be beaten twice as a Nick Hawtin double capped another fightback from a goal down. So loomed a massive game with Clean Sweep. To the victors a near certain qualification. Alas it was Clean Sweep by 1-0. Nick Hawtin's drawn-out departure had begun by the following week as a lacklustre 0-0 draw with Hunchenbadback left Jiggle with it all to but they shrugged off the loss of their top scorer to Alltraders showing great fighting qualities to beat Motley Crew through Dave Carling's third of the season in Game 10. This set up a winner takes all clash with Horley. Or so we thought. Agony as a stoppage time goal crushed Jiggle but it didn't matter as a Baker Boys win meant neither side qualified. 7th place not a true reflection of a great season. The 18 points a Jiggle record.

New Year 2003

Any thoughts of a gentle transition into the New Year after the controversy created by Nick's move to Alltraders were wiped straight from the mind as football's ever mischevious fates conjured up the opening day match nobody wanted but the one you just knew was going to happen - Jiggle versus Alltraders. The build-up seemed to last an eternity but the match was certainly worth the wait. Nick opened the scoring with a sublime finish for his new side midway through an Alltraders dominated first-half. The second was a different story as a fired up Jiggle called on all their reserves to produce a memorable comeback. Dave Carling hauled Jiggle level then Chris Laker, with his first goal in over 50 games drove home a superb winner with the very last kick of the game. Not before or since has there been a game quite like it. After that, there was always a danger that the rest of the season might be a bit of an anti-climax. A Jon Hawtin strike defeated Norfolk Enchants in Week 2 but maximum points from the first two games couldn't disguise the fact that the side weren't playing that well. A 1-0 defeat to Half Moon provided evidence of this but in spite of their poor form Jiggle still managed to dig out some decent results as draws with BT Dynamo's and Caledonian followed in Week's 4 and 5. When the wheels decided to finally come off they did so in style. Jiggle turned in a dire display as a scorching Horley romped to a 5-0 win that could've been 25. Amazingly, two weeks later we were right back in the play-off frame, Dave Carling struck as a 1-1 draw was earned against Farah, then Dave Leake arrived right on cue to score his first Jiggle goal and bag a 1-0 win over CPI A. Up to 5th a good run in the last three games could have grabbed a most unlikely qualification. Not to be as the poor form that had characterised the season finally took its toll as Blue Shirts (2-4) and Gilly's (0-2) emerged victorious, as did White Knights but the manner of the 1-0 defeat was much more encouraging. Some restructuring and some shrewd manouevreing in the transfer market was needed to arrest the slump for the Summer.

Summer 2003

Jiggle entered the Summer with their lowest expectations for quite some time. A challenge for a play-off place was not expected so when it came it was a very welcome surprise and a credit to a re-built squad. First signs of new blood came after an opening day reverse by the odd goal to champions Boys From Brazil as Chris Laker engineered the signing of St.Francis Flyer's midfielder Andy Chong. Andy was not available as Jiggle made a big breakthrough the next day reaching the knockout stages of the Bright Challenge Cup, Dave Carling and Paul Eagle scoring three goals apiece to guide Jiggle to second in their group. Andy made an instant impact, not turning up till the 7th minute of the Week 2 clash with The Blues, but his arrival gave the defence some added solidity and a promising 0-0 draw was gained. In the intervening week Jiggle pounced for their second Summer signing as Sam Cohen, a prolific goalscorer with Ifield Eagles was snapped up to bolster the attack. Andy and Sam looked to be quality acquisitions and their impact was immediate as both scored their first goals for their new club in Week 3's 2-0 win over eventual semi-finalists Crawley Casuals. The big tests were yet to come and evidence of the progress made in a very short space of time was clear when Jiggle became the only side to deny Horley three points in Week 4. The draw for the Burgess Hill Festival the next day had given Jiggle what looked like their best opportunity to make real progress at a day tournament. They did it in style topping the group and making the quarter-finals and the sports pages of the Burgess Hill paper! Sam's 4 goals showed what he had to offer. And so to Alltraders, now a completely different side to the one of previous meetings and now dominating League B. Jiggle had their chances but couldn't take them, Alltraders did and edged a 1-0 win from the tightest of games. That game saw the debut of Horsham midfielder Carlo Castrechino who arrived as holiday cover and was instantly influential getting the first in a 3-0 win over John Holmes. AFC Cerveza and Two Left Feet were beaten and Jiggle were closing in on the Finals till an unlucky 1-0 defeat to BA handed the initiative to Crawley Casuals. Paul Eagle's dramatic winner against Kelly's took it to the final day but an injury-ravaged side was beaten 1-0 by Bentcomp meaning Casuals who won anyway grabbed the 4th spot. It was a very good Summer and in pushing hard for a Finals place Jiggle had come a long way since the struggles of the New Year campaign.
