Having romped to their biggest win in two and a half years last week, hopes were high that the Jigglers could continue to build on a solid start to 2004 with a second successive win. In a very tight division Jiggle's five points from three games actually placed the side as high as third going into tonight's match so a good performance could consolidate a place in the upper echelons of League A. The opposition were Resident Weasels who had started with one point from nine but had proved sturdy opposition when Jiggle met them in the recent Autumn Fives. A tight encounter was on the cards...
Resident Weasels 0 FC Jiggle 0 FC Jiggle are fast becoming the draw specialists of the 5-a-side world after picking up their fifth draw in seven outings against a resolute Resident Weasels. Like the match with Broadfield 5 the Jigglers enjoyed the bulk of possession and chances but like two weeks ago were unable to produce the guile and cutting edge to make them count. In a very tight League A, White Knights appear by far the cream of the crop and one would expect Caledonian to rise to challenge them over the coming weeks. After this as many as eight teams, all very evenly matched, look set for a nip and tuck battle all the way to the Week 11 finishing line. On a high after the 5-0 drubbing of Two Left Feet, Jiggle named an unchanged side for a third week running. David Leake partnered Stu MacPherson in defence with Dave Carling and Sam Cohen combining up front. Chris Laker was available for the final time this season and started sub while Nick Rapley was kept out by a groin injury. Andy Chong remains sidelined and will likely be out for a few more weeks. When the two sides met in November it was a tight encounter with Weasels well organised at the back and Jiggle striving to make the breakthrough they eventually made when Stu's thunderbolt fizzed into the top corner. It was clear as this game unfolded that it would take something a bit different to break the deadlock once again. Jiggle were fast out the starting blocks and Stu keen to make his first mark on the scoring charts was unlucky to miss the target inside the opening seconds. Soon after, Sam gained possession a couple of yards from the edge of the box and let fly with a viciously swerving effort which the keeper did superbly to divert away from the top corner. Weasels had enough about them in attack to keep the Jiggle defence on their toes but it continued to be the latter who were creating the openings. The best chance of the match came to Sam on seven minutes as he forced the last man into a mistake, robbed him of possession only to be denied by the post with just the keeper to beat. The keeper was again alert to keep out Stu before half-time arrived with Jiggle, though by no means bossing the game doing enough to suggest the three points were there for the taking. They might have been but for a lazy spell at the start of the second period which rather surrendered the initiative. While Weasels failed to conjure a shot on target they had certainly calmed any worries that had been created in the first half and were it not for two good blocks by David Leake might have done more damage. Slowly Jiggle began to come back to life and it was Sam who was unlucky to see a borderline area call go against him after he had slid the ball into the Weasels net with five minutes to play. As in the November game Jiggle looked most dangerous when Stu was able to join the attacks and with three minutes to go as it opened up for Stu a repeat winner looked on the cards but alas this time the shot was wide of the target. There was time for one final drama as a long ball from the back was flicked into the path of Sam who agonisingly failed to make contact with the goal at his mercy. With no further alarms at either end Roy's whistle ended a predictably tight tussle but one which Jiggle will, like the other two draws this season be disappointed not to have won. Six points from twelve is a sound start but the Jigglers know that draws will need to become wins in the near future if a play-off challenge is to be launched later in the season. Next Friday sees a big game against a Horley Boyz side who toppled early leaders Brazil Almighty tonight and sit just above Jiggle in the table. 6.30 next week, be there! Team: Phil Laker, David Leake, Stuart MacPherson, Dave Carling, Sam Cohen. Subs. Chris Laker (unused) Jiggle Online Man-of-the-Match: David Leake |
