Stu scorcher seals Weasels win

Having picked up three points without kicking a ball last Friday the Jigglers were tonight set for only their second match in the last month. It was a big one too and the game that kicked off a big night in League B which would see 6 of the leading 7 sides locked in direct combat. The opposition for this evening's early bird kick-off were Resident Weasels who Jiggle's network of spies revealed are actually a side comprised of Leisure Centre staff. So, a true away match for the Jigglers. Would the players be nicely refreshed by the recent break or would rustiness kick in?

FC Jiggle 1 Resident Weasels 0 (Stuart MacPherson 17)

A fizzing long-range thunderbolt from the boot of Stuart MacPherson fired the Jigglers to a third consecutive league win against the Resident Weasels to perfectly set up next week's big game against Hunchenbadback. It was a strike worthy of winning any game and gave Jiggle the three points they deserved after a patient and hard-working display.

Tonight's 6.30 kick-off was refreshing in itself as the Jigglers have definitely done their share on the late-shifts in recent months and with the Chelsea coaching course cancelled due to Leisure Centre lighting problems Jiggle enjoyed a full 20 minute warm-up before tonight's big game. The line-up showed three changes to that which began the Crawley Casuals match with Nick Rapley, Dave Carling and Stuart MacPherson all returning to the side. An injury to Andy Chong sustained last weekend when a bloke landed on him meant David Leake retained his starting role. Tonight's subs were Jon Hawtin and Sam Cohen, who encouragingly stuck 4 out of 5 one-on-ones away in the warm-up to banish the ghost of his finishing masterclass two weeks ago. Resident Weasels, the Leisure Centre's own side enjoyed the perk of their own changing room in the office overlooking Pitch 4. This was to be an interesting 'away' game for the Jigglers.

It was a bright start and Nick Rapley was just wide with a good chance to open the scoring inside two minutes. It was Nick again soon after ghosting in on the left side of the box after good work from Stu but lofting his shot over the bar.

Jiggle's build-up play was patient and ensuring the bulk of the possession. A goal continued to prove elusive and Weasels were showing enough threat on the counter attack to suggest they could get it first. When Jiggle were caught under-manned at the back a great chance fell to a Weasels attacker who was frustrated by a fine smothering stop by Phil Laker in the 6th minute.

The Jigglers had as yet failed to meaningfully hit the target at the other end and the theme continued, Nick and Stu again combining well to play in Dave Carling to drill wide of the near post. Finally the keeper was called into action seeing his first strenuous activity to turn behind Stu's long-range effort just before the break.

An entertaining and very well contested match continued in the same vein after the interval with Jiggle probing away and the Weasels looking to capitalise on the break. Dave Carling fired over at the back post before Weasels put together their best move of the night in the thirteenth minute, a couple of neat one-touch passes creating a chance sidefooted inches wide.

The game was opening up and now it was Jiggle's turn to have a golden opportunity. David Leake made an interception in midfield and with Weasels committed in attack released Stu in on goal only for the Jiggle man to be thwarted by a fine save by the keeper to keep the blank scoresheet in tact.

Weasels had a good chance, bringing a smart save from Phil but if Stu's fans were dismayed at their hero's failure to put Jiggle in front a moment earlier they weren't disappointed for long. Receiving the ball at the back Stu moved into the attacking half and let rip with a stunning long-range drive rising all the way into the top corner of the net. A real quality goal and what a way to break the deadlock.

Jiggle maintained concentration well as the threat of an equaliser was stifled well high up the field. Indeed the Jigglers almost made it two in the last minute as Jon Hawtin capitalised on indecision between defender and keeper to poke a shot inches wide of the near post. It didn't matter as Roy blew the full-time whistle to cap Jiggle's fifth win of the Autumn.

This was a sound performance and a good three points. Stu's third goal of the season puts him level with Sam at the top of the goalscorers charts. The second match on between Hunchenbadback in 5th and Livingwell in 6th was won by Hunchenbadback to set up a real humdinger against Jiggle next Friday. The Jigglers will be looking to hit top form for this one, the biggest game of the season so far. Can Jiggle make it six of the best? Be here next Friday to find out!
