Motley Crew 0-2 FC Jiggle

Last week's unexpected 2-0 win against The Blues was a cracking performance and a cracking result. But it was just one result. The real test would be to move on from that and produce the same level of performance week in week out over the eleven week season. The first challenge awaiting Jiggle came in the shape of a Motley Crew side themselves buoyant after a 2-0 victory against Livingwell on the opening day. Would Jiggle be up to the task?

Autumn Fives 2003 had seven days ago begun in exactly the same fashion as the corresponding competitions in 2001 and 2002, with three points. Last year Jiggle followed it up with victory in their second match against Templec Hawks. Tonight the challenge was the same with Motley Crew standing in Jiggle's way if they were to build on last week's very encouraging first day win against The Blues. Motley Crew have like Jiggle recruited new personnel over the past couple of seasons and represented tough opposition for this second match of the season.

The Jiggle starting line-up saw the one change with Jon Hawtin coming in to partner Nick Rapley in attack. David Leake and Stuart MacPherson continued at the back while Sam Cohen and Dave Carling provided the back-up from the bench. The fit again Andy Chong took on a watching brief ahead of his anticipated return to action next week.

Jiggle almost struck early as Nick Rapley wriggled a yard of space behind the Motley Crew defence and dispatched a low shot turned behind by the keeper's boot in the second minute.

The early wake-up call this provided seeme to stir the opposition into action and they proceeded to enjoy the better of the first period. Phil Laker was called into action for the first time in the fourth minute as a Crew attacker pounced on a loose ball two yards outside the box and forced the Jiggle keeper into a good one handed save down at the far post. Then two minutes later the keeper did well to block a fierce snap shot driven in from the right edge as Jiggle continued to be a tad too generous with their marking.

The spell of pressure wasn't over, a long ball over the top caught the defence napping, giving the striker the chance to let fly with a fierce drive which cannoned back off the post with the keeper beaten.

Crucially Jiggle hadn't conceded and were still creating good chances of their own on the counter-attack. The best efforts came courtesy of Jon Hawtin as first a cross-shot fizzed inches wide of the far post and then a fierce dipping drive on the turn from an audacious angle smashed against the cross-bar. Had it gone in it would have been one of the best goals to grace a Jiggle match.

Goalless at the break, Jiggle needed a big second-half improvement if they were to get their second win of the season. They instantly set about the task. Stuart MacPherson was becoming more of an attacking influence and along with sub Sam Cohen began to provide the impetus required to change the game. Sam shot wide soon after coming on before Jiggle got the break they needed in the thirteenth minute. Stu, seeing the space open in front of him seized the opportunity firing a low shot which somehow eluded the keeper's attempts to save with his boot and bounced into the back of the net.

A slice of good fortune is always very welcome and Jiggle now looked to make the game safe. Stu and Sam linked up two minutes later providing the latter a great chance to shoot till denied at the last by a swiftly recovering defender.

Stu saw another shot blocked before the clinching second goal was scored two minutes from time. The ball was swiftly moved out of defence for sub Dave Carling on the left, he drew the defender and unselfishly squared for Sam to take a touch and make no mistake, burying his shot low into the far corner.

This wasn't the end of the drama though with enough time still left for Motley Crew to find themselves reduced to four men after a skirmish in the middle of the park resulting in someone calling Terry 'fat' not once but twice. Soon after the full-time whistle sounded and Jiggle had recorded a second very good three points.

Tonight's performance may not have hit the highs of the first game but another very good result was achieved all the same. As many a TV pundit would say doing the business and digging out a result against tough opposition is a vital attribute for any successful team to have. Can Jiggle continue the great start against Livingwell next Friday? Tune in here to find out!
