A couple of weeks later, Jenna, JC, and Katie were heading over to Justin's house for a barbeque on a Saturday. Everyone at the party could tell that something was up. They would have to be blind not to see the tension between JC and Jenna. The subject of Katie's father hadn't come up since that night. JC hadn't asked and Jenna wasn't about to bring it up. JC had even been staying in the guest room and they only talked when they had to.
Audrey walked up to Jenna after awhile. She was really starting to worry. Jenna and JC avoided each other all day. "Maybe you should just tell him," Audrey said. Jenna just looked into space. "It can't get any worse. You're not even speaking."
"It would get worse," Jenna said now she looked at Audrey, "It would get a lot worse."
Then it got really quiet except for one voice. Jenna looked over and saw Katie standing on the deck singing. Jenna knew she had Justin's voice but no one else had ever heard it. Katie never sang to anyone but Jenna and that was only when Jenna wasn't feeling good. She wouldn't even sing to JC. But now she was singing to him and as everyone got quiet she got louder and started to sing to everyone.
"Wow," Audrey said, "I know you said she had his voice but she's only two and she can sing like that!"
Jenna just stood in awe as Katie stopped. It was silent for a moment before everyone started clapping and talking again. Jenna couldn't even process what had happened. All of a sudden it seemed as though her world started to crumble beneath her. Not only did she look like Justin but she sang just as well as he did and now everyone knew it. And with JC wondering who her father is. It was just a matter of time before the pieces fell together. Jenna started to feel sick to her stomach.
JC walked up to her, "I didn't know Katie could sing." This was the first full sentence he had said to her.
"It's interesting. She started because she wanted to cheer me up. She said that she always sings to you when you aren't feeling good. Why hasn't she sung before?" JC asked.
"I guess she didn't want to," Jenna said.
"Well she will now. She really loves it," JC said, "Did you see her eyes light up when everyone started to watch her?"
"Yeah, she loves it as much as you do," Jenna said.
"Yeah I guess," JC said as he turned back to Katie who was talking to Derek. JC stared at her for a minute. Then all of a sudden something clicked inside his head. He had met Jenna at their hotel, nine months before Katie was born. Only Nsync personal were on that floor. He had heard Jenna sing and she was nothing like that. JC's eyes scanned the crowd until they landed on Justin. He was so stupid. Why didn't he see it before? Katie looked just like him.
"You slept with Justin?" JC asked loudly, not even realizing it. He looked over at Jenna and as their eyes met he knew it was true. "Why didn't you tell me?" the anger rising in his voice. Jenna didn't answer she just stared with a look of terror on her face. JC was screaming now, "I asked you and you didn't tell me! I asked who her father was and this whole time you knew it. I thought her father was long gone and it turns out it was one of my best friends! Say something!"
At this point, tears were dripping down her face. Then softly she whispered, "I'm sorry."
"That's it! That's all you have to say, 'I'm sorry'," JC yelled.
This time raising her voice, she yelled, "Yes, that's it. That's all I have to say!"
"Well that's not enough," JC said quieter as he turned around.
"JC," Jenna said, pulling his arm as he walked away.
"Don't, touch me you� you whore!" JC said as he pulled away.
Jenna just stood there stunned. She suddenly realized that she wasn't alone and turned around to find Justin staring in shock about what he had just witnessed. Everyone looked at him now just waiting for him to say something.
Finally he said, "So�So�I'm her father?"
Jenna shook her head slightly yes. She could tell that he was still trying to process it He was probably doing the math to remember that night. However, knowing that he wouldn't Jenna stated, "It was October 21st. You sat down next to me at a club. We talked for awhile before you invited me back to your hotel room. The next morning I woke up ecstatic that I had been with my idol and all you could muster up was Britney's name. I left the room crying and got into the elevator which got stuck and that's where I met JC. Subsequently, nine months later Katie was born."
Justin just stared at her letting it all sink in. Jenna decided that she wasn't going to stay there any longer. She got Katie and had Audrey take them home.
