Useful Downloadable "Stuff"

Here's what I think are some of the more important downloadable "stuff" you can get on the net. I started this originally in case my computer died so I'd be able to get all my favourite programs back again but thought I might as well link to it on my main site so other people could make use of it. As you can probably tell lower down, I'm an Unreal Tournament fan, so if you haven't got it... buy it! If there's anything you think should be up here but isn't, then let me know here or post about it on the new message board. Thanks!

WinZip 8.0

Latest version of the king of file compressing programs. Used by literally everybody. Handles .zip and some other files. Squashes down lots of huge files into one small file, which to be read have to be extracted. Useful for speeding slow downloads up. [1.20mb]

MSN Messenger 3.6

Not the best chat program around, but it's simple and easy to use (as well as being run by Bill Gates!) Sometimes the servers can be dodgy but I use this all the time to talk to friends so it's well worth getting. [748kb]

ICQ 2000b

Flower power! Probably the most popular chat program, also useful as you can use it's SMS Message service to text friends and they can reply back to your computer, both for free. The "eh-oh" gets slightly annoying, but, apparently, it's possible to turn it off. [5.08mb]

Winamp 2.73

Play all your mp3s and other common media files using this. Also has great hypnotising visualisations that change in time with the music (k most mp3 prgs do now but nevermind) Reliable and can also be used to compile play lists. [1.20mb]

MIRC v5.82

A chat program that gives you access to literally millions of chatrooms (or channels) and servers. You'll find one on pretty much anything, from fishing to porn (there's a lot of perverts out there, I guess) to emulation's and warez. [1mb]

Scoop 2001e

Another version of mIRC, letting you use more emotions. Also has extra features such as an mp3 player (its crap but I guess the thought was there) but is mainly designed for people like James. If you're clever enough you can apparently reprogram extra commands in it. [1.35mb]

AudioCatalyst 2.1

Another way of getting mp3s if you have a slow modem or can't find them using either of the above - rip them off the original CD. Favoured by record companies for obvious reasons. Takes a while but can be quicker for 56k and less people. [2.85mb]

Cute FTP 4.2

A useful, quick and easy way to upload files onto your web server, but isn't available with some servers. Easy to use once you've managed to get it to connect successfully the first time. [1.57mb]

X-Drive 2.11

Free hard drive space on the net, which is useful to back up any files you've got. This program runs in Explorer so you can browse your online files like your hard drive, but is slightly unstable and also extremely slow for bad connections. [1.28mb]

UT Bonus Pack I

If you've got Unreal Tournament, then this is the first of four bonus packs. Includes several new levels, skins and games to frag your way through. [13.8mb]
