Cell has a minor telepathic ability that has recently manifested itself and Cell tries to repress it when it is not needed. Although it seems that his abilities are growing stronger, and are harder to control He also has the ability to emit beams that disrupt beams that disrupt machines. At different frequencies, which he can control, he can decide to only fizzle it or if placed at full power he can disrupt all machinery within a 5-meter radius. He also uses this on people although the effects aren't as great (except if they have machinery on them [i.e. A pacemaker]).
His powers manifested during one of his flying lessons, he caused the plane to short out and crash.
History:
James was an average child with an average life until the day his powers manifested. Being a very responsible child and teenager, James' parents decided to allow him to have the flying lessons that he always wanted. He was a fast learner and soon became the student that the flight instructor had. One day they were practicing evasive maneuvers when the engine shorted and the plane lost control. A sudden joust of turbulence served to knock the instructor unconscious. James was alone and began to panic. He felt something within him and a bright flash the controls began to spark as the plane hit the ground.
The next thing he knew he was in a hospital bed. Beside him were his parents and a strange man who was hidden within a shadowed corner. His parents knew that he was a mutant and understood what he was going through because his mother was one too. They introduced him to the man they called Sampson and they explained to their son that Sampson could help him control his powers.
James went with Sampson to his home and it was there that he was introduced to Kai, another new arrival. They were Sampson's first students. It was there that he learned to control his mutant ability and began to travel with Kai to recruit other mutants for the team.
Although James was taught by Sampson, he doesn't remember ever seeing the man's face. At first James believed his powers to be a prison thus he took on the codename Cell but although he now knows it to be different he has not changed it. The codename Cell now serves to remind him of what he's fighting against. Mutant imprisonment.
He was one of the first Guardians and is also the teams pilot.
