The Training and Enterprise Fund
Etordome is a very poor community, mainly due to the dependence on farming: 70% of the community is entirely dependant on farming as the only source of income, and 79% of the population experience problems providing adequate food, clothing and healthcare for their families during the dry season when the yields from the farms are low. Only a fifth of families are able to afford to send their children to the second stage of secondary school, or to fund further technical training, and therefore the cycle of poverty is perpetuated, as the majority of the young people in the community have no choice but to continue as small scale farmers.

Etordome Development Organization (EDO) has identified the need for community members to acquire new skills to allow them to supplement their farming incomes. They also recognize that the establishment of co-operative groups in the community will allow the training to benefit the whole community, through disseminating the new skills to as many people as possible. The EDO has established a project framework, whereby a group of 6 to 10 people will form each co-operative group. The EDO will provide funding for training for one or two members of the group, who will be required to pass on their new skills to the other members. The EDO will also fund the initial start up costs of the enterprise.

Once the enterprise is up and running, the co-operative group will repay the funds to the CBO, allowing them to establish new groups. The focus will be on providing additional skills and income generation for the poorest members of the community.

The intention is to establish two co-operative groups initially, drawing on skills already present in the community:

A Cocoa Growing Co-operative
