| MISSION:
To promote development in the community of Etordome, particularly through working towards the following objectives: 1. Improve literacy, computer skills and exam results for young people in the community. 2. Improve literacy for members of the community of all ages. 3. Reduce poverty which is a result of dependence on peasant farming as source of income for the community. 4. Improve young peoples chances of gaining employment when they leave education. 5. Establish partnership arrangements with other communities and organizations outside Africa who may be able to help with development projects. BACKGROUND: Established at a community meeting in February 2007, the Etordome Development Organization (EDO) is comprised of seven members of the community, all well-respected and with considerable experience of serving the community on other committees, and of organizing community development projects. Community projects that the committee members have been involved in since 1995 include: Electrification of the village. Construction of new school blocks for the primary and junior secondary schools. Construction of a kindergarten for the community. Construction of a community borehole. Organizing palm-oil production and mushroom growing cooperatives. The EDO therefore has considerable experience of successfully carrying out community projects, including communicating with the community to ensure their support and participation in the projects. For each of the aforementioned construction projects, the community has provided much of the materials and labor required for the buildings, indicating the strong level of commitment to this type of project in the community. In addition to the considerable experience already present in the EDO, a volunteer has also been working with the group over the summer of 2007, improving the organizations capacity and sustainability through work on skills such as needs analysis, drawing up the EDOs strategy and objectives, proposal writing, computer skills and project planning. ACTIVITIES: Current projects: To build a library and computer centre for the community To begin to provide some library services to the community through setting up a temporary library in one of the classrooms of the junior secondary school outside of school hours. To establish a womens co-operative to grow mushrooms. To establish a cocoa growing co-operative. To establish a link with a UK school. To form links with communities outside of Africa. These additional projects are planned for action in the next 2 to 3 years: To establish reading club and computer club to encourage use of the library and computer centre. To provide play materials for the kindergarten. To establish links with traders for selling products produced in the community. To provide pumps and pipes for irrigating fields. To mechanize farming by providing farm machinery on loan to farmers. To provide grants for young people to attend senior secondary school. To find apprenticeship opportunities for young people. |
