More about Etordome Junior Secondary School

Etordome Junior Secondary School, to be known as Etordome Junior High School from September 2007, is a small school with an enrolment of approximately 90 students.

There are currently five teachers in the school, teaching the nine subjects in the Ghanaian curriculum: English Language, Mathematics, General Science, Ghanaian Language (in this area, the local language is Ewe), Social Studies (which comprises Geography, Economics and History), Religious and Moral Education, Pre-Vocational Skills, Pre-Technical Skills and Agricultural Science. These are examinable subjects. In addition, there are subjects such as Physical Education, Music and Dance, and Life Skills which are non-examinable.

Discipline in the school is good on average. However, the academic records for the past years have not been encouraging. Factors in this have been the facts that many of the students come from families where the parents are illiterate and also poor attendance until two years ago when the government started providing free primary education. To help improve results, the community is working on a Library/Computer Centre, with the hope that one day they will be connected to the internet. In the meantime, students will have the opportunity to read more widely and learn to use a computer, which will help their literacy, English and job prospects.

The school would like to support this initiative by forming a partnership with a school elsewhere in the English speaking world. The hope is that the students will correspond and share information about their lives, ideas, goals and aspirations and well as discussing the challenges, and as a result will improve their English skills. The school envisages that the partnership could involve undertaking joint projects in English and Agricultural Science/Biology. For English, we are working on a reading club: students could perhaps share their impressions of a text. For Science we would be interested in finding out more about agriculture in your part of the world, and can share information about farming in our country. We are sure that many students will be surprised to hear that we farm and eat grasscutters: a sort of large rat!

The teachers in the school are interested in information and discussions about teaching techniques in your country. For example, there is very little provision for learning difficulties in the Ghanaian curriculum, so we would be interested to learn about how other schools deal with these issues.

We would also be delighted to welcome visitors from our partner school and show them the operations of our schools and community.

On a practical note, as our community does not have internet access at the moment, we are only able to access email approximately every two weeks, when one of the members of the community who is able to use a computer travels to Ho, the regional capital. Otherwise, we can communicate via post or telephone more easily.
