To improve this situation, Etordome Development Organization is planning a library and computer centre for the village. The library and computer centre project has strong support from the community, who believe that the provision of books for the community will help to foster a love of reading and therefore better literacy and exam results for students at the schools. Many community members have also indicated their willingness to volunteer to help out and organize activities at the library.
The opportunity for the students to learn computer skills will improve their literacy, exam results for those who go on to attend senior secondary school, and chances of finding gainful employment once they have completed their education. In addition to assisting the youth of the community, the library will serve as a resource centre for the adults of the community, providing them with materials that they will find useful such as advice on agricultural techniques, and a venue for adult literacy classes and other educational initiatives.
The building will also provide space for a staff common room for the school, which is currently lacking. As a result, the teachers will have a convenient space to gather for staff meetings, further professional training activities and preparation work. This space will also be made available for meetings of co-operative groups which the community is also in the process of establishing.
