Community Partnership / Adopt-a-village
Looking for a partner community in Africa? Looking to adopt a village?

Etordome is located about 25 kilometres from Ho, the principal town of the Volta Region. Travel to and from Ho takes between half and hour and an hour, depending on local transport links. The people of the village belong to the Botoku people of the Ewe tribe, which spans Eastern Ghana and Togo. The people migrated from Togo several hundred years ago, after escaping from the rule of the cruel king Agokorli. Now, the area is quiet and peaceful, overlooked by the green slopes of Weto mountain.

There are just under 400 inhabitants of the village, and the main activity of the community is peasant farming, that is, farming using minimal chemicals and only manual labour. Some members of the community supplement their small income from farming with other activities such as basket weaving, and basic processing of farm produce such as making cassava dough. There are 2 schools in the community, a primary school and a junior secondary school, plus a kindergarten.

We are keen to develop a link with a community in the UK, USA or other English speaking country, and will be delighted to receive visitors to our village, and to demonstrate local traditional and cultural practices such as dancing, drumming, palm wine tapping etc. We are also keen to find out about life in the partner community, particularly with regard to small businesses in the village, how they operate, and if we can find ways of creating some kind of economic links between the villages. We also hope that the partner community will be able to assist us with development projects for our community.

Our Junior Secondary School is also registering with the Global Schools Database to find a partner school, and would be interested in joint school projects, teacher exchanges, should funding be available, and communication between teachers to further professional development and encourage exchange of ideas.

We can communicate with potential partner communities by post, phone or email, although we are only able to check email approximately once every two weeks.
