1.ใช้คู่กับ past simple ใน 2 เหตุการณ์อดีต เหตุการณ์หนึ่งกำลังดำเนินอยู่ในอดีตใช้   past continuous ในขณะที่มีอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดแทรกขึ้นมาใช้ past simple เช่น
ี้      -When I reached the station ,it was raining.
      -While I was talking to him , I heard a knock.
      -While we were leaveing the island,the weather changed suddenly.
      -The man was sleeping when the robbers came.

     2.ใช้กับเหตุการณ์อดีตที่เกิดขึ้นหรือดำเนินไปพร้อมๆกัน สังเกตได้จากคำเชื่อม while หรือ as ใช้past continuous ทั้ง2 ประโยค เช่น

      -He was cooking as I was writing = เขากำลังปรุงอาหารขณะที่ผมกำลังเขียน
      -She was writing a letter while I was playing.

      3.ใช้แสดงการกระทำเฉพาะเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่งในอดีตตามเวลาที่บ่งไว้ชัดเจน เช่น
-He was having breakfast at 8 A.M. yesterday.
-We were watching television at 8 o'clock last night.

    4.ใช้ในการเปลี่ยน direct speech เป็น indirect speechใช้ past continuous แทน present continuoust   เช่น
-He said , "The boy is writing." เป็น He said that the boy was writing.
