1.ใช้เทื่อการกระทำเกิดขึ้นและสันสุดลงแล้วในอดีต
โดยไม่มีอะไรต่อเนื่องถึงปัจจุบัน สังเกตจาก
adverb บอกเวลา กลุ่มคำ หรือประโยคที่แสดงความเป็นอดีตมากำกับไว้
เช่น
ago
= แล้ว,มาแล้ว
Formerly =
แต่ก่อนนี้
yesterday = เมื่อวานนี้
yesterday morning
= เมื่อวานตอนเช้า
last + ....เช่น
last Monday
= เมื่อวันจันทร์ที่แล้ว
last year
= เมื่อปีกลาย
last night
= เมื่อคืนนี้
just now = เมื่อตะกี้นี้
in the past = ในอดีต
inthe old days = ในสมัยก่อน
in those days =
ในสมัยก่อน
in 1957 = ใน
ค.ศ.1975
the other day = วันก่อน
the day before yesterday = วานซืนนี้
when I was young = เมื่อตอนฉันเป็นหนุ่ม

Alsaged a six-year-old girl to death here yesterday.

asleep a few minuts ago.( ใช้ past simple เพราะมี ago )

2.ใช้แสดงการกระทำอันเป็นนิสัยในอดีต
คือครั้งหนึ่งในอดีตได้กระทำอยู่เป็นประจำ
-when he wasyoung, he got up early.=เมื่อตอนที่เขาเป็นหนุ่ม เขาตื่นนอนแต่เช้า
-Last year he came here every week.
-My father uses to smoke cigarettes.
- I used to smoke thirty cigarettes a day , but now I have cut
down to ten.

ข้อสังเกต ประโยคที่มี adverb บอกความถี่บ่อยๆ เช่น always,sometimes,often,usually,
every day โดยปกติใช้ present simple แต่ถ้ามีคำบอกเวลาที่เป็นอดีตกำกับอีกชั้นหนึ่งใช้
past simple เช่น
-I aiways got up carly last month.
3.ใช้แสดงการกระทำในช่วงเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต
และจบลงแล้วในอดีตเช่นกัน เช่น
-I stayed in London from 1970 to 1979.
4.ใช้บอกสถานภาพที่ไม่เป็นจริงในปัจจุบัน
โดยมากอยู่หลังสำนวน I wish,I'd rather,It's time เช่น
-I wish I were a millionaire.
