Real Name: Hope Elise Ross Lange
Born: November 28, 1933 in Redding Ridge, Connecticut, USA
Husbands: Don Murray (1956-1961)
Alan Pakula (1963-1971)
Charles Hollerith, Jr. (1986-present)
Attractive, reserved blond actress who made quite a splash with her first two pictures: Bus Stop (1956, in the supporting role of Emma) and Peyton Place (1957, which earned her an Oscar nomination for her performance as Selena Cross). Born to show people, she was already a 12-year veteran of the Broadway stage by the time she'd first appeared on-screen. She played leads and supporting roles in many other films, including The Young Lions (1958), The Best of Everything (1959), Wild in the Country, Pocketful of Miracles (both 1961), Love Is a Ball (1963), and Jigsaw (1968), but failed to catch fire with the public and remained a second-tier star. She starred in the TV series "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (1968-70) and "The New Dick Van Dyke Show" (1971-74), achieving more recognition for her small-screen work than she had for her movie roles. She had a small but memorable part in Death Wish (1974), playing Charles Bronson's brutalized wife. Lange returned to the stage in the late 1970s and has made infrequent film appearances since, including The Prodigal (1983), A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), Blue Velvet (1986, in the latter as Laura Dern's mother), and Just Cause (1995). She was once married to actor Don Murray, her Bus Stop costar, and later wed director Alan Pakula.
Hope played Irene Sperry, the psychiatrist who councels
Glenn Tyler (Elvis) in Wild In The Country. After his
success in Flaming Star, Elvis was ready to try another
dramatic acting role. Unfortunately, his performance
in Wild In The Country varies from really good to really
bland. Still a curiosity, though. And there's no doubt
that Hope and the other talent surrounding him (including
Millie Perkins and Tuesday Weld) inspired him to turn
in a very good performance! However, you gotta see the
"drunk Elvis" scene, where he and Tuesday get plowed
on Uncle Ralph's tonic, and turn the garden hose on
Hope's house.
