The Tower of Gold

Origins.

The Tower of Gold (El Torre del Orro) was built around 1220 A.D. by the Almohad Moors. Contrary to it's name, it is NOT made of gold. It was constructed as a watch tower built into the city walls overlooking the river Guadalquiver and is believed to have been one of two such structures on each side of the river. This would have allowed for a chain to be stretched between the two bastions to control access to the port.

The Gold.

During the height of the Spanish Empire, ships carrying goods from the Americas would sail up the River Guadalquiver to Sevilla before unloading their cargo of precious metals. The tower was used as a giant depository for the immense quantities of gold that these vessels would offload.

Today.

Today, the "Torre del Orro" remains standing on the banks of the Guadalquiver as a Maritime Museum.
