The Cathedral
Origins. The tower of the Cathedral, La Giralda, began as
the minaret of the "Great Mosque" built between 1184 and 1198 under
Moorish rule. This was one of three minarets of the Arab world that
were know as the "Three Sisters." The other two were in Marrakesh and
in Rabat. The Renaissance bell tower was added onto the turret between
1558 and 1568 which brought the overall height to 312 feet. The Cathedral
itself is one of the largest Gothic churchs in the world and was constructed
between 1402 and 1509 on the foundations of the mosque. Craftsmen were
brought in from Castilla, France, Fleming and Germany to work on the project
which was not completed until the 20th century.
Today. Today, the Cathedral of Sevilla, "La Giralda,"
continues to dominate the skyline. The belltower is easily seen from
everywhere in the city as well as from the suburbs. In addition
to being a major downtown tourist attraction, the Cathedral is also
the spiritual heart of Sevilla. |
