The Plaza of Spain
History. The Plaza de Espana is located in the "Parque
Maria Luisa" (Maria Luisa Park) near the center of town. The park was redesigned between 1911 and 1928 for the Hispanic-American Exhibition. The Plaza itself was the emblem of the exhibition and the symbol of Spain.
Construction and Design. Between 1914 and 1928 more than one thousand
workmen were employed on the construction of the Plaza. The
semicircular structure consists of a gallery overlooking ceramic designs
dedicated to each of the provinces of Spain - with the actual pavillion
in the center and two 262 foot towers on the ends of the "horseshoe."
In front of the structure is a canal over 500 yards long that follows the curve
of the plaza and a central fountain.
The Park The park itself where the plaza was built is no less of a marvel. Made up of avenues, oriental courtyards and gardens, the overall 346 acre effect is spectacular. So spectacular that George Lucas chose the park and the plaza as the settings for a number of scenes in his latest movie: "Attack of the Clones." (Click here for more info.)
