Montez Downey, a 6-6 guard who graduated from Bishop McGuinness in 2005, has committed to play at UNC Wilmington, his former high-school coach said. Stan Kowalewski, who coached Downey at McGuinness and now coaches at High Point Central, said that Downey recently visited UNCW and gave a commitment Tuesday night. Downey didn't attend school in the fall semester but spent the spring semester at Miami Dade Junior College, where he practiced with but didn't play for the basketball team. Downey, the brother of Taron Downey, a former guard at Wake Forest, averaged 23 points, four rebounds and 3.2 assists in his senior season at McGuinness. Read More.

Chester basketball standout Richard Flemming has changed his commitment and said yesterday he'll attend Fairfield University on a basketball scholarship. Flemming, a 6-foot-7 center and Chester native who transferred to Chester High in December after starting the season with Notre Dame Academy in Virginia, had signed a letter of intent to attend George Mason. Chester coach Fred Pickett said Flemming was released from that commitment in "a mutual decision." Switching from a reigning NCAA Final Four team to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Association team may seem a step down, but Flemming looks forward to playing sooner for a Division I program that's relatively close to home.
He said George Mason wanted him to play at a prep school for a year. Flemming thinks he can play immediately for new Stags head coach Ed Cooley. "Coach Cooley did a real good job selling me on this opportunity, and on his vision," he said.
