Now you need to select a position for meditation, purists will say lotus position or something equally difficult that needs a contortionists skills to manage! I think its more important that you are comfortable and in a position in which you can relax. This might be sitting cross legged on a sofa or large chair, or on the floor even. You don’t want to be too comfortable or you are likely to fall asleep, for this reason I don't recommend meditating while lying down but hey, if it works for you then why not!?
In any position that you do, it is important to keep your back straight as it reduces stress on your back that might accumulate from sitting in a fixed position for extended periods of time. Also I have found personally that I can meditate better when my back is straight as opposed to being curved or bent in some way.
Some good positions:
Sitting cross legged on a carpeted floor with your hands holding your knees or gently resting on your thighs.
Sitting on a chair or sofa cross legged. Sometimes a sofa can be too soft making it difficult to sit up straight.
Sitting on a chair or sofa in the normal sitting position, this is better if you find that you are getting "pins and needles" from sitting cross legged on the chair or sofa.
Lying on your back with legs straight and arms by your side. This position should not be done in a bed as from personal experience I have found that you tend to fall asleep doing this, though if that’s what you want then this may be good for you. I find it better to use this position on a carpeted floor which reduces the chance of falling asleep.
