This mixed dry deciduous forest land dotted with grasslands, harbors the largest diversity of mega fauna in West Bengal. Two major areas - Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary and Gorumara National Park are home to the Great Indian one horned rhinoceros, apart from other animals. After reaching an all-time low in the
mid-seventies, the population has now bounced back and the rhinos are kept under constant surveillance. Buxa Tiger Reserve is home to the majestic Bengal Tigers. Other forests are Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, Neora Valley National Park, Singalila National Park (though last two are alpine forest not in the Dooars area but nearby).

The sun and the trees always play a hide and seek in the jungles of Dooars

How to get there ( Approach & Access ) :

Siliguri, in the foothills of the Himalayas, is most convenient entry point to Dooars. Siliguri is well connected by air, rail and road with the rest of India. There are regular flights between Bagdogra (Siliguri) - New Delhi and Bagdogra - Dumdum (Calcutta). Check the timing with Indian Airlines and Jet Airways. If you want to come by train, you have to get down at New Jalpaiguri station (Siliguri). Numbers of train connect it with New Delhi and Sealdah (Calcutta). From New Delhi some good trains are Rajdhani Exp. (2436/2424), North-East Exp. (5622), Mahananda Exp. (4084) etc. and from Sealdah, the trains are Darjeeling Mail (3143), Teesta-Torsha Exp. (3141), Kanchenjunga Exp. (5657) etc and from Hpwrah Kamrup Exp. (5959),. Check the timing with Indian Railways. Luxury bus service also connects Siliguri with Calcutta.

Broadgauge and metregauge rail service connects most parts of the Dooars with Siliguri. Gorumara and Chapramari visitors may stop at Malbazar. One recommended journey is the metregauge train for Alipurduar (one passenger in the morning and the other Intercity Express in the afternoon) from New Jalpaiguri / Siliguri Junction which passes through three wildlife sanctuaries. Jaldapara visitors can get down at Madarihat station . Buxa Tiger Reserve visitors should reach at Alipurduar. Mahananda wildlife sanctuary and Singalila National Park visitors can start their journey from Siliguri itself. Picturesque roads lay lazily through the jungles to make you reach your dream spots.

Note :

  • Though you will find excellent cooks in every forest bungalow, you have to take your ration in case of night staying (except Malbazar Tourist Lodge and Hollong Forest Bungalow) ·
  • Do not travel at night in the jungl
