This 760 sq. k.m. jungle, which is under Project Tiger, comprises of deep Teak forest and the dence canopy of aTeak, Bahera, Sal, Jarul etc. trees in planes with their adeep aundergrowth. aThe forest is avery rich in Orchid. River Rydak, Sankosh, Bala and Jayanti flows through ait aand athe dry ariverbeds aare a afavourite playground for the Tigers, Leopards and Elephants. It is home to the majestic Bengal Tiger. This forest has 67 atypes of amammals aout of awhich a23 are in the endangered list. They include Leopards(Black Panther also), Sambar, Clouded Leopards, Elephants, Spotted Deer,a Barking Deer, asnakes like Indian Python and Cobra, Monitor Lizard, Wild aBoar, aSloth Bear, Wild Dogs a(Dhol), aPorcupine, aGolden Lion-tail Langoor, Himalayan aLangoor (monkeys), etc. It's also home to 230 types of adifferent birds like agreat Indian Hornbill, Greater aRacket-tailed aDrongo and aother adrongos,
Raptors Blacknecked Crane, Golden Oriole, Minivet, Flycatcher, Tit, Eagles etc. Within the tiger reserve, Buxa and Jayanti area are most famous. It's a paradise for jungle trekkers' with some abreath-taking view ornamented with wild fountains. aMost popular route is from Santlabari to Buxa (2600 feet), which is 5 k.m. away. aThe Buxa fort were once the detention camp for the Indian freedom fighters.
Enthusiasts acan also go afurther 4 k.m. to aRover's Point (4500 fet) or Roopam Valley (in Bhutan), which is 14 k.m. away. From Buxa, visitors can also trek to aJayanti through the jungles but a local guide would be a must. aAnother route is to visit the aPukri Pahar awhere they can see a small lake with acrystal clear waters. aAmong other attractions, aJayanti range got one watch-towers at 23-rd Mile . aAt Rajabhatkhawa there is one Nature Interpretation centre and one Orchidarium. aTourists can also visit the aAnimal Rescue Centre at aRajabhatkhaoa from where they also have to collect their entry-permit to enter the forest.

How to get at Buxa Tiger Reserve ( Approach & Access ) :

To go to aBuxa Tiger Reserve, visitors have to come to Alipurduar afrom where Jayanti is about 30 k.m. away. aNew Alipurduar astation has got good train connection with Calcutta. Some good trains are Kanchenjunga Exp. (5657), Teesta-Torsha Exp. (3141), Kamrup Exp. (5959) and Saraighat Exp. (2345). From Alipurduar, two state buses go to Jayanti via Buxa Road a - aone in the morning and one at noon. Buxa goers have to get down at Santalabari. Day-visitors should hire a car from Alipurduar.
