Singalila National Park

Singalila National Park is the highest located National Park ( between 2400 m to 3650m A.S.L.) in West Bengal, and is situated in the extreme north western boundary of Darjeeling District. The park contains some of the last remnants of virgin and pristine forests. This is reckoned as an unexplored treasure trove of flora and fauna. The park is not only famous for its wildlife but also offers one of the best trekking routes in the eastern Himalayas - from Maneybhanjan near Darjeeling, via Tonglu to Sandakphu (35Km) and Phalut. The view of the Kanchendzonga range of peaks from Sandakphu is a wonderful and unforgettable one. Viewed from Phalut, the Kanchendzonga looks close enough to touch. Motorable road goes upto Sandakphu. Rail, road and air routes via New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri and Bagdogra, connect Darjeeling from Calcutta and New Delhi.

Forest type of Singalila National park changes with altitudinal range. The major flora are Mailing Bamboo, Buk, Kawla, Magnolia, Bhujpatra, Rhododendron, Oak, Hemlock, Silver Fir, Juniper etc. The wild life of this National park consist of Himalayan Black bear, Red Panda, Clouded Leopard, Leopard Cat, Serow, Barking Deer, Yellow Yhroated Marten, Niltava etc.

How to get at Singalila ( Approach & Access ) :

From Siliguri the journey to the national park can be either by road or rail. If one is not in a hurry, then the famous heritage toy train can be taken. The plaintive shrill whistle of the steam locomotive echoes in the forests of Teak, Magnolia and Sal trees lining the railway track. The National Park started after 1km of 'Tumling', nice villages on the
way to Sandakphu. The visitors have to get down at Ghum. From Ghum jeep is available for Manebhanjan. The trekking for Sandakphu & Phalut is started from Manebhanjan. It offers the most fantastic views of the

snowy range and the experience of lush green valleys. One passes through temperate forests of Rhododendrons and Magnolias.
