The photographs of the 2002
MerrilI Lynch Acoustic Stage event were all taken by Andy Radcliffe. He managed to capture all the bands and musicians that played this year except for two: one because he had to leave for three quarters of an hour and the other because he was playing in the band himself. He and I both apologise for the first omission and we're both relieved by the second (I'm in the band too).
We both wanted to avoid the harshness of photgraphs taken with flash so he used a fast film with the fastest lens at his disposal but sometimes the low levels of light led to some very slow shutter speeds. Some cases resulted in some rather nice colour tones (see the Little Chuck Little pic.s) and in others some blurring of individuals who were unable to keep still for a 15th or a 30th of a second - who could..?
A conventional camera and film stock was used for the pictures and they were scanned using a rather ordinary flatbed scanner. Andy has a specialised negative/slide scanner which should improve vastly on what appears already. But he is on holiday for a fortnight. When he returns no doubt we will run some negatives through his machine. Where we find improvements, I shall post them to this website and let those of you on the mailing list know. I am very grateful for Andy's patience and photography and feel that the record of the 2002 Acoustic Stage is much enhanced by his efforts.
