The Defence Medical Association of Canada was formed in 1892 in Montreal and was then known as The Association of Medical Officers of the Militia of Canada. It changed name several times until the present name was adopted in 1937.

The DMA exists primarily to support Canada's military medical personnel serving with the Canadian Forces Medical Service (CFMS) both in the Regular and reserve forces. Our membership is drawn from across Canada and we include all medical professionals who are interested in or retired from the Canadian Forces or Allied Nations. The DMA is a constituent member of the Conference of Defence Associations (CDA).

DMA has a National Executive, a National Council, Branch Councils and Branches and Members at Large. Branches currently exist in the Provinces of :

In provinces without specific branches, members are assigned to the closest branch of their choice or may join as members-at-large..

We hold a National Clinical Study Day and Annual General Meeting in the Fall of each year. Every second year our Study Day coincides and co-locates with the CFMS Conference known as OPMED . Each year we seek accreditation for our Conferences in order to assist with the continuing medical education of our members. These conferences are open, besides our own members, to both Canadian military and civilian health care members, as well as military medical personnel of allied forces. Members attend at discounted prices. Individual branches hold meetings and social functions at their own discretion. Our publication entitled "Starlight" is published on average twice a year and is mailed to members as is the CFMS publication entitled "Medicus."

The program and some of the presentations of each Study Day are maintained at this site until superseded by the current Study Day. The program for the upcoming Study Day is also posted at this site and is updated as planning proceeds. Upcoming events for CFMS Units and DMA Branches are also available here, as known. At our Links Page there are links to other medical and military sites of interest and to the home pages of any organization which has in the past assisted us with sponsorship for our Study Days. Members who have their own home pages may request an entry in the Links Page.
