Both the pledge and national anthem are mottoes of The Bahamas that are recited by all Bahamians. These two mottoes bring together all Bahamians; regardless of their ethnicity, gender, status in life, age or physical location. Although the creator of the pledge is still not know to this site, it is known that Mr. Timothy Gibson, CBE, wrote the national anthem. He composed the anthem as part of the Independence celebration in 1973. The replacement of the British national anthem with this new one symbolized how far the Bahamas had come as a country but still showed how much further it still had to go.
Pledge
"I pledge my allegiance to the flag, and to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas; for which it stands one people united in love and service."
National Anthem
"Lift up your head to the rising sun, Bahamaland;
March on to glory, your bright banners waving high.
See how the world marks the manner of your bearing!
Pledge to excel thro' love and unity.
Pressing onward, march together to a common loftier goal;
Steady sunward, tho' the weather hide the wide and treach'rous shoal.
Lift up your head to the rising sun, Bahamaland;
'Til the road you've trod lead unto your God,
March on Bahamaland."
