The
online survey done by Dr. Tom Clark in 2001 used 44 different
virtual K-12 schools in United States to study some important
facts about these virtual schools such as, their mission, grades,
enrolment, tuition, founding, and teaching methods. Each one of
the K-12 virtual schools studied in this survey showed different
missions; for example, according to the Houston Independent School
District “the mission of the virtual school is to allow
for two way interactive learning anytime anywhere for any student”
(Clark). According
to the Clark survey the studied virtual K-12 schools have different
purposes;
"Several responding virtual schools serve special learner
groups, such as Stanford’s EPGY, which according to the

Ray Ravaglia, seeks to “provide gifted students with an
education comparable in content and quality to that provided by
the best schools in the world.” UC College Prep Initiative
(UCCP) provided online college
preparatory courses to high school students for the express purpose
of increasing their eligibility for admission to top-flight universities….the
University
of Texas at Austin High School Program, whose mission is “to
serve students who cannot attend a regular high school in their
home area.” Other seek to provide an alternative, like JeffcoNet
Academy in Colorado, whose vision in part…is to provide
“to meet the needs of a variety of students who could not
be readily accommodated through the traditional classroom""
(Clark).
