Social Interaction

One of the threats about children attending virtual schools is lack of sufficient social interaction needed for their development. Distance learning is mostly individual learning, as a student is learning by herself/himself. In individual learning dialogue is carried on only with the study material whereas in group work it involves one or more partners. Communication with others is an important factor in shaping one’s

personality. Being around students in a same age group, making friends, spending time with people other than family members, playing sports with other students and interacting with teachers are some of the important activities that are missing in virtual K-12 schools. Children attending virtual schools would not be able to experience and do the fun activities such as, playing games, going to school trips and making friends; instead, they would be staying at home, and not interacting with others; this could be very harmful for children’s development. One should realize that getting education is not the main reason for children to attend school, but getting their personality built and developed is more important than getting educated for them especially for younger kids.
