Distance
learning has made education easy and accessible for people who
have difficulty attending school. Distance
education is being used
by adults for continuing education, and by university/college students
to get a post-secondary degree. It is also being used in various
countries by K-12 (kindergarten to high school) students. Different
groups of
students attend “virtual classrooms” including gifted students,
sick children, students with disabilities, young athletes or artists
travelling the world during the school year, as well as kids travelling
with their family because of their parents’ job |
requirements.
Distance learning is beneficial for some people with special needs,
in various ways that will be discussed later on in
this site, but it is not an ideal forum for learning. Children
need social interaction for development, personal interaction and
feedback between student and teacher is needed, and distance learning
requires
motivation, regular participation and appropriate technology access.
This reasearch will argue that because of these problems, distance
learning/virtual school is not ideal for K-12 education.
