Several angels with proper names and characteristic functions emerged in the Scriptures as God delivered the Israel from the enemies. Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and the group of seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints and enter into the presence of the glory of the Holy One (cf. Tobit 12:15, Daniel 10:13, Zechariah 4:10).
Michael, whose particular authority was underlined by the prophet Daniel, was called "one of the chief princes" or the "young prince" (Daniel 10:3, 21). His name signifies "who is like God". He was thought to be the angel who defends those who had just died from the final assaults of Satan. "But the Archangel Michael, contending with the devil in a dispute over the body of Moses, did not presume to pass a reviling judgment on him, but said, ' the Lord rebuke you'" (Jude 9).
VICARIATE OF SAN MIGUEL
St. Michael the Archangel
The victory of the troops of Michael over those of Satan and his rebel angels was clearly described in the Book of Revelation: "Now war broke out in heaven, when Michael with his angels attacked the dragon. The dragon fought back with his angels, but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world, was thrown down with his angels" (Revelation 12:9).
Feast: September 29.
