The Immaculate Conception is the assertion that God graced Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, in such a way that she was preserved from sin from the first moment other existence. The term "immaculate" refers to the absence of sin or stain and the word "conception" refers to Mary's very beginning. Hence, this belief points to the graciousness of God to Mary as she came into this world "full of grace" - without sin.
In 1854, Pope Pius IX declared this belief to be a dogma of the Catholic Church. In the words of the decree, the Pope pronounced: "We declare, proclaim and define that this dogma is revealed by God and therefore to be firmly and unremittingly believed by all the faithful: namely, the dogma that holds that the most Blessed Virgin Man, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege from Almighty God and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ was kept free of every stain of original sin" (the bull Ineffabilis Deus).
