On Sunday, the 13th of May, 1917, at noontime, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three little children who were tending their shepp in the high mountain ranges near a hamlet named Fatima, in Portugal. A flash of lightning drew the attention of Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta, and they saw a brilliant figure appearing over the trees of the Cova da Iria. The "Lady" asked them to pray for the conversion of sinners and an end to the war, and to come back every month, on the 13th. Official recognition of the visions that the children had at the Cova da Iria came on October 13, 1930 when the Bishop of Leiria- after long inquiry authorized the cult of our Lady of he Rosary at the site. The apparitions of Fatima have brought pilgrims in Portugal who hear the message repeated which Mary spoke to the children: prayer, works of penance, recourse to her Immaculate Heart. On May 13, 1982, Pope John Paul II celebrated mass at the Shrine and gave communion to the 75-year old Carmelite nun, Sor. Lucia dos Santos, the only living member of the three children who witnessed the apparitions.
