 Our Day At the Farm
Thursday, October 2, 2003

Upland Hills Farm is a Midwestern farm that has been providing educational and recreational programs to the people of southeastern Michigan for over 40 years. Today the Farm has grown into a fun place for children, family and friends to enjoy themselves.

Fall is the time of harvest, changing leaves and Halloween. With that in mind, we participated in lots of fall activities at the farm.

Into the barn we go.

Wow! Critters!

Don't look now,
but here comes
a little kid!

Ha! Glad he
chose you!

Milking sure takes
it out of you!

Can you believe
he did that?

enjoying the day.

Here we are, at the farm. It sure is great to be away from school. Fresh air, blue skies and an exciting day ahead of us.

First we visited the little barns to see the animals that live there. There were cows, sheep, goats and some of us even saw a pig. We found out all there is to know about milking a cow. Did you know that ice cream starts out in a cow? Well, it does. And, Jovian even got to show us how easy it is.

Then Farmer Steve told us about the animals and how we use the good things that they give us. Sheep give us wool for clothes, cows give us milk to drink, and chickens give us eggs for those yummy Sunday breakfasts. He even showed us how to make butter. That was work!

After lunch we all went on a hay ride and walked the Storybook Trail. that was really fun!

Our day ended with feeding the ducks and a trip to the pumpkin patch so we could pick out our very own Halloween pumpkins.

A Fire Station Visit
You must have QuickTime Player installed to view the slideshow!

It was a great day far a walk to the WBFD's Station #9. Our 1st graders were met by Lt. Mike Flynn and his crew of outstanding fire fighters.

They took us on a tour of the station. We saw where they sleep, the lounge where they relax, and the kitchen where they prepare and eat their meals. All of us were surprised to find out that even firemen and firewomen have to make their own meals and make their own beds. They each take turns with the cooking.

Lt. Mike taught us all about fire safety. He talked about how important smoke detectors are, how to exit a burning building safely and what to do if we should happen to be on fire - Stop, Drop and Roll.

Then we got to go see and actually touch the equipment. Their is a ton of stuff that they need to fight fires and to protect themselves. We got to sit inside and climb all over the truck. Cool!

Three of us were chosen to do a demonstration. We rode in the truck with the sirens and lights going, hooked up the hose, and shot water just like the big guys/gals do. That was way Cool!
