
Curriculum Highlights - Grade One Our Lady of Refuge School 2003 - 2004
Although this is not entirely written in stone (unlike the Ten Commandments), we will utilize the following guidelines to shape your child's first grade learning year. These have been devised over a lengthy period of time to ensure that each child will have a concise and firm footing in the educational goals of Our Lady of Refuge School that will carry them through their entire school experience.Quick Jumps: Phonics | Reading | Religion | Mathematics | Science | Bottom Phonics Top
1st Quarter
During the first quarter, the first graders will be taught to auditorily discriminate beginning, medial and ending sounds, as well as, consonant sounds in isolation. Children will learn to distinguish rhyming sounds and learn to recognize all partner letters.
2nd Quarter
This quarter, the first graders will learn the short vowel sounds and understand the concept that consonants and vowels are blended together to form words. Students will decode short vowel pattern words.
3rd Quarter
Students will be introduced to the long vowel sounds in this quarter. Students will learn to decode and spell long vowel, pattern words.
4th Quarter
In the fourth quarter, students will learn to identify initial and final consonant blends. Students will also learn to identify the sound of "Y" as a vowel sound.
Reading Top
The teaching of reading is an on-going process with specific skills being introduced, taught, practiced and re-taught across the quarters. Please note that the information stated below is outlined as skills are introduced in the text. Of course, thematic reading and writing will be an integral part of each quarter.1st Quarter
The first graders will be introduced to our formal reading series by MacMillan/McGraw Hill (copyright 1997). Skills introduced in this quarter will include following directions, main idea, text and picture details, capitalization, ending punctuation and table of contents. Vocabulary skills that will be introduced will be context clues, classifying and referents.
2nd Quarter
During this quarter, skills from the previous quarter will be reinforced. Additional skills to be introduced will include antonyms, sequencing, quotation marks, apostrophes, and story details. Comprehension skills such as cause and effect, drawing conclusions and following directions will also be part of this quarter.
3rd Quarter
Students will be introduced to the first reading anthology this quarter. Skills from the previous 2 quarters will be practiced and reinforced. Comprehension skills of predicting outcomes and making comparisons will be introduced. Decoding final consonant blends, consonant digraphs and double ending consonants will be practiced.
4th Quarter
During this quarter, the first graders will be introduced to their 2nd reading anthology. There will be greater emphasis on comprehension skills, both oral and written. All skills previously taught will be reinforced. Additional skills will include special vowel and consonant sounds and an introduction to alphabetizing.
Religion Top

1st Quarter
First grade religion concepts this quarter include learning about God and Creation, especially the gift of life. Students learn that God's story is in the Bible. They learn that we must care about others in relation to God's Promise to send His Own Son.
2nd Quarter
During the second quarter, students learn about the different facets of Jesus as Son, Friend, Teacher, and Giver of Himself, coupled with the season of Advent and the birth of Jesus.
3rd Quarter
Some of the Religion concepts taught during the third quarter are those of the Holy Spirit and the Church; the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist; and finally the season of Lent.
4th Quarter
The last quarter is devoted to learning about the Parish and the Church, about Peace and Justice. It stresses God's eternal love and forgiveness, culminating in praying the Mass.

1st Quarter
During the first quarter, students will be counting, reading and writing numbers 0 - 20. The students will begin to study and understand addition concepts using numbers 1 - 12 in both vertical and horizontal form. Additionally, they will become familiar with a number line.
2nd Quarter
During the second quarter, students will be introduced to subtraction strategies and facts to 12, in both vertical and horizontal form. They will learn to recognize the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. Recognition and completion of "Fact Families" will also be part of this quarter. Lastly, place value through 100 will be introduced.
3rd Quarter
We continue our focus on problem solving to learn math concepts, strategies and facts. Students will learn money concepts and solve problems using pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and a dollar. We continue learning addition and subtraction strategies and facts through 20. Students will tell time to the hour and half-hour.
4th Quarter
In the 4th quarter, we learn about the concept of measurement and units of measure. We explore geometric shapes and use patterns to solve problems. Fractions are introduced by finding equal parts of a whole. There is an introduction to addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers.
Science Top

Our first grade Science emphasizes learning basic concepts while focusing on scientific thinking and problem solving.
1st Quarter
During the first quarter, the first graders will be studying living things focusing on animals and habitats.
2nd Quarter
In the second quarter, students will study physical science. Concepts covered include: states of matter; properties of sound, light and heat; moving and working, and magnets and simple machines. Students will also learn about our five senses.
3rd Quarter
During the third quarter, students will learn about staying healthy. Topics include the food pyramid, dental hygiene and safety. Students also study earth science focusing on the earth, sky, and weather.
4th Quarter
Students will learn about plants in the fourth quarter. Our final unit of study is Growing Up.
