Derek's Professional Portfolio

For the final project in IT-330, I was tasked with designing a database for a fictitious store’s inventory system.  The project was created in April 2012 and is intended to demonstrate the mastery of the database design processes, including: data models / modeling tools and techniques; approaches to structured and object design; models for databases-- relational, hierarchical, networked, and object-oriented designs; CASE tools; data dictionaries, repositories and warehouses; with a strong focus on the relational database architecture.

The simple inventory systems logical database design created in IT-330 demonstrates the above outcomes through the identification of the database tables needed, corresponding fields, key identification, field specifications,  relationships, and the complete UML Entity-Relationship Diagram created using the tools provided in Microsoft Visio.

Throughout the course and while working on the final project I learned how to translate existing business rules into data model objects (entities, attributes, relationships, and constraints) as well as how to apply normalization processes to correct table structures, minimize data redundancies, and reduce the likelihood of data anomalies.
