Derek's Professional Portfolio

The final project for BUS-206 is a PowerPoint presentation that I created in February 2015 which analyzes an organization that has been in the news for questionably legal and possibly unethical conduct. The purpose of the presentation was to demonstrate our competency of the global, legal, and ethical environment of business and our ability to make ethical business decisions that are in line with legal and organizational policies.

The PowerPoint presentation analyzes the conduct of internet search giant Google, and their questionably legal and socially irresponsible decision to collect and decode unencrypted Wi-Fi data from the general public through its Street View mapping project. My assessment of the Google Street View case clearly identifies the federal wiretapping law that the corporation allegedly violated, the lack of legal interpretation which lead to Googles justification of their actions, the social and economic impact of their actions, and provides an appropriate course of action to prevent future occurrences by Google or other organizations.

In creating the presentation I learned about the many decisions that organizations are faced with and the importance of making decisions that are globally, socially, and ethically responsible and which conform to legal and organizational requirements. Additionally, I learned how prior court rulings are often used to define the current interpretation of law and how I can use these prior judgements to determine if certain actions would be legal. However, I also understand that if decisions made are moral and ethically responsible, then questions of legality should rarely arise.
