My initial interest in Information Technology began early with the family’s first computer and was later reinforced with the subsequent systems and various video game consoles acquired over the years. However, my official involvement with Computer Information Technology started when I enrolled in a Bachelor’s of Science degree program at Southern New Hampshire University. I began with a general study in CIT and was unsure of the specific direction to go with the degree until an unexpected visit from a customer ignited a conversation that would alter my life and inspire me to pursue a career in Software Development.
Nigel- a Software Engineer for a large IT firm and volunteer mechanic for a local snowmobile club stopped into my place of employment to pick up some parts for the clubs snow groomer. Upon seeing a Database Systems textbook on my desk we began talking about the various fields of IT and he was kind enough to share his experiences with me. In listening to him speak it was not so much the words he said that caught my interest, as it was the emotion he portrayed his message with. It became immediately obvious that he genuinely loved what he did and it was then that I realized how similar we both were. Like Nigel, I too enjoy the stimulation that comes from identifying problems and areas for improvement, the creativity in devising solutions, and the satisfaction of a successful implementation. It was then that my interest in IT became more focused and I added the concentration of software development to my program of study at SNHU. Subsequently, my modest goal of establishing a career in IT metamorphosed into a mission of becoming an integral member of a development team that designs solutions to real world problems, while providing an opportunity for life-long learning and development.
As part of my program at SNHU I have been exposed to various elements encompassing software development with courses pertaining to various Programming Languages such as, ‘Java’, ‘C# .Net’, ‘C++ .Net’, ‘SQL’, ‘HTML5’, ‘JavaScript’, and ‘CSS’; Computer Platform Technologies / Systems Architecture; Network Telecommunications; Web Site Design; System Analysis, Design, and Implementation; Object-Oriented Analysis and Design methodologies (Use Case Analysis, UML constructs and Models, etc.); Database Systems Design, Implementation, and Management; Discrete Mathematics and Algorithmic Thinking / Design. These courses have provided me with an understanding of the appropriate tools, methods, and skills to solve technology-related problems and recommend effective system design and maintenance solutions. Furthermore, the courses pertaining to general business operations and management have helped me to apply these skills to meet user, customer, and organizational needs and support decision-making strategies within the business environment.
The trials and tribulations experienced throughout my program at SNHU and resulting satisfaction of overcoming various adversities further solidifies my commitment to continue to develop myself personally and professionally, and to embrace my creativity in designing solutions to real world problems. I believe that the skills obtained throughout the program at SNHU, coupled my passion for learning and determination to succeed are what makes me an ideal candidate.
