| Welcome to my site. My name is Dennis van der Heijden and I come from the Netherlands. Two years ago I quit my job as a lawyer for refugees and decided to go and do volunteer work in Ghana, West Africa. I ended up in Tokokoe, a small village in the eastern part of Ghana, in the Volta Region, close to Ho (the regional capital). I taught English, maths and P.E. there in the Junior Secondary School. |

| My parents first visited Tokokoe in January 2003. During that visit the people of the village installed my father as development chief of Tokokoe. Since then we are trying to raise money for educational projects in Tokokoe. Our main focus is on rebuilding a copllapsed part of the primary school. They had an old building made of mudbricks. It stood for a long time, but collapsed in the end. There were no casualties. Now a lot of children in the primary school have to sit outside under temporary sheds. We feel it would be better if they had their own classrooms again! That's why we started fundraising projects in the Netherlands. We work closely with the Wild Geese (de Wilde Ganzen). That means they add money to money we raised. The total cost of the new building is 19,000 euros. If we raise 12,000 euros the Wild Geese will add the last 7,000 euros. We are getting close! Apart from that we also applied for a grant from the Dutch Embassy in Accra for some other educational projects: * to finish a three classroom block next to the new structure. It is in raw state and needs to be plastered and finished. * to finish the kindergarten in Tokokoe Motte. The kindergarten in Abudi is already finished. * to build toilet facilities for the schools * to make water drainage systems for the kindergarten and primary school * to ship some goods from Rotterdam to Ghana. The goods have already arrived. |
