Riley Darling was the youngest of 4 sons from Davis and Phebe Darling, born in 1829. He worked the farm with his father in Geneseo. The 1868 New Gazetter & Business Directory of Livingston, NY by G. Emmet Stetson lists them as "Davis Darling and Son, farmers of 80 acres".
He married Mary Eurania Whaples from Connecticut and they had 4 children. By the 1860 Census they had one son, named Frederick who was born in 1855. They also had a 17-year-old servant named Mary Taylor included in their household count.

By the 1870 Census, Riley and Mary had three more children, named Nellie (age 8), Mildred (Millie)(age 3) and Dwight (age 1). However, Frederick is not listed at this time. Information on his fate is unknown. Riley's occupation was listed as a farmer, and Mary's was listed as "keeping house". In the 1880 Census, Nellie is 19, Millie is 12 and Dwight is 11. Nearly all of 1890 Census records were destroyed by a fire in the Commerce Building in Washington, D.C., so Riley and Mary's information from that time period is unavailable. Both Mary and Riley died within weeks of each other in the summer of 1908.
