Who's Dave Ward?
What's all this PhD stuff about?
At what stage is the PhD?
I work as a mechanical engineer in the R & D dept. of a large consumer goods manufacturer. Aged 43, born in Sunderland (GB), married to Licia with 2 boys (aged 7 and 17yrs).
I have just completed a part-time distance research degree with the Open University regarding the hydrodynamic shear stress effects on soil removal from textile surfaces.
The scope is to understand the importance of the boundary layer characteristics on the removal of soil from textile surfaces. Most of my experiments have been done in a purpose-built water tunnel,  that's shown in the picture above, and that was 12meters long!.
The scope is to understand more about the shear stress and forces near surfaces, especially irregular ones like textile surfaces wher soil collects.
The goal is to remove the soil more efficiently and effectively and is worth billions of dollars. In fact this topic touches everything from cleaning microelectronic devices (e.g. microprocessors) and clothes to even heart surgery.
Yes, believe or not, while you reading this page your heart is ensuring that shear stress keeps your artery walls free of debris.
In fact if it isn't done properly you will soon find out as among the consequences are: cardiac arrest, heavy breathing, irregular heart pulse etc.
The picture in the 3rd column shows a patented device designed to measure the hydrodynamic conditions inside a washing machine drum.
This device was realised with the latest stereolithography technology and based on wireless monitoring using LABVIEW SW.
I completed my research late last year (22nd Nov. 2000) and I had my graduation ceremony 31st March at Harrogate, UK.
I have published and presented several papers that you can find as abstracts on the following pages.
One of my papers was awarded the Dana Chase Memorial award for best paper at the Annual International Appliance Conference for household appliances Columbus, Ohio, March 2001.
I'm also planning to present a few more that you can peep at also on the following pages.

Please be patient with me as the web site is still under development.....so stay tuned.

Enjoy my web site pages and please don't hestitate to contact me if you want to know more.
